A Good War Horse.
At a dinner not long ago one of the
guests remarked that Bavarian horses
were celebrated for their general worth¬
lessness. ‘He said that- a dealer sold one
to a German officer during the Franco-
Prussian war. and warranted him to be a
good war horse. The soldier came back
afterward in a towering passion and said
lie had been swindled. “And how?
said the dealer. ‘ ‘Why, there is not a
j bit l>; him of ‘go’ good in 1 him, and horse.” briraf. yet Jt you “Yes, it Npa warranted I T did did;

Flax Dressing In Chili.
Senor Isidore Errazuriz, the Chilian
immigration agent in Europe, has been
ordered to offer free passage to Cliili to
twenty Irish families who are expert in
the act of dressing flax. It is said the
plant grows wild there in abundance,
that it is of excellent quality, and that if
a few people who understand preparing
the staple for market are once established
there the industry will soon be of great
importance. —Poston Transcript.
Especially to Women.
“Sweet is revenge especially to
women,” said the gifted, but naughty,
Lord Byron. Surely he was in bad hum
or when he wrote such words. But
there are complaints that only women
suffer, that are carrying numbers of
them down to early graves. There is
hope for those who suffer, no matter how
sorely, or severely,in Di. R. V. Pierce’s
“Favorite Prescription.” Safe in its ac
tion it is a blessing, especially to wo¬
men and to men, too, for wh?n women
suffer, the househrld is askew.

Before n Russian Court.
Usually when a suspect is placed on
examination or trial and is permitted to
make a defense, he employs his attorney
under tt contract like this; If sentenced
to Siberia the fee shall be 1,000 roubles;
if only a year's imprisonment, 5,000
roubles; if acquitted, 10,000 roubles. The
trials are then conducted under the prin¬
ciples of the Russian proverb; • -The cause
is decided when the court receives a
present.” Thus the success of the lawyer
depends upon his ability in pleasing tho
judge’s taste in present giving. It is not
once in twenty times that a prisoner sus-
pec ted of crime against the crown is ac
quitted. - Now York Sun.
