ACGU8TINE. The Subtropical Exposition»The Streets of Jacksonville aud Hie St. Augustine Hotel. Special Correspondence New; . Jacksonville, Feb. 10,’88. As I told you in my last letter from Waycross, T. B. Reams and myself remained over there and took the morning train this morning for this place. We were unfortunately de layed on the way, and in ihe inem time it commenced to rain shout ten o’clock in the morning, and contio ued to rain until late in the evening; which circumstance interfered very much with enjoyments, as well as with our plans. It prevented us from going to St. Augustine. Most of (jur delegation came on down here last night and so far as I know they all went down to St. Augustine. All that 1 have heard from report the mammoth hotel there tho grandest one on the continent. All hands that have visited the grand display of tropical fruits here at the Exposition grounds pronounce it as indescribable and can only be ap predated by visiting them. Now, for a few words about Jacksonville. Four years ago I was here. It was a grand place then, but the improve¬ ments made since I was here four years ago are simply astonishing. I mention especially the improvements on the streets. They were a bed of deepi sand and now they have them paved with blocks of cypress standing on end, sawed smooth and sysiemati cally put in, making the streets smooth and nice, and serves the same purpose as the Belgian rock. As you know, this is a fast age iu which we live and an age of great im provemeutin travel,. ICor instance it is 353 miles from Griffin to Jackson ville via Albany. Trains that leave here at 7 o’clock p. m. will arrive in Griffin at 11:30 next day, if no deten tion occurs. V man that wants to feast his eyes on sawmills, planing and matching mills, turpentine or cnards, and distilleries, Ac., can be fully accommodated by tak'ng day time run from Albany to Jackson ville. In the whole route of 171mil«s he will see more of the things describ ed and less of good farming land, and fewer comfortable dwelling houses than be could see in the same distance any where I know of. Truly, there are a few men settled on the road, and as Bill Arp would say, seem to be comfortable and serene. I must close for today for want of time. Respectfully, S. W. Bloodwortii. P. S.—While 1 was writing up Waycross I omitted to mention that they have two flourishing week ly newspapers and a mixed school of 160 students. s. W. Griffin, Ga , Feb. 18 Editor Maws:—On Friday a no gro woman named Mary Tharp, liv ing iu Southeast Griffin, i ear Ison’s branch, while working on her premi sea had her eye put out by a shot fired from a parlor rifle by an un known white buy. By this schedule the \ u of M« Donough and Henry County get on® tram each way a day, and th»t » mixed one. If they want to com® to Griffin they can start at bcif past two in the afternoon of on® day sod get back at one o’clock in th® after noon of tLo next da;. They will find nice I eds and hospitable accost modations w hen our hotels are not too crowded, uod this will b® r®rj convenient for attending the many entertainments at the opera boot® of a uight and getting tb® jog filled next morning: ladiea are requested to bring tbeir knitting. Bat people who come on business will find tb® railroad vary good walking, even to muddy weather, alwaya being car® ful not to wear out the croaatiea and to keep a sharp lookout for the nam erous trains. There is only one objection to tLiis schedule. As tbo people of Henry county can not possibly com® to Griffin two days in sneceaaion tb® way trains now run, wby coaid tb®y not all arrange to com® on tbe same days, and thus save tbe useless cx pense ol running a tram each way every day? One train south one day and north the next day ought to b« sufficient. We submit this to th® man who made up this schedule, and wbo seems to be too mocb influenced by Henry coudIj's liberal snbscription.
