GRIFFIN GEORGIA, FRIDAY MORNING, MARGH 2 1888
Invent tom ami Tunnel Digging.
Work upon tho Mont Cenis tunnel
fore was begun in 1857, about tivo years l>e-
De Losseps commenced operations in
®8ypt. The working parties in tho oppo¬
Christmas site headings, French and Italian, met on
the day, 1870, about a year after
St. inauguration of the Suez canal. Tho
Gothard tunnel w as lx>gun after the
completion of the Mont Cenis, in 1872;
the headings met Feb. 29, 1880. The
length of the Mont Cenis tunnel is over
seven and a half miles; that of the St.
Gothard about nine and a quarter miles.
These are the longest tunnels ever con¬
structed.
The invention, by means of which the
progress of the work was facilitated, con¬
sists in the uso of atmospheric air as a
motor. By means of water power air is
reduced to one-sixtli its ordinary bulk,
and the expansive force thus acquired
performs the drilling. Owing to the
conditions under which tunneling is done,
this method is of signal advantage.
Each of the Alpine tunnels was excavated
through solid rock, so that blasting was
necessary. The use of explosives vitiated
the air, while the length of the passage
and the impossibility of sinking shafts
made the ventilation question a vital one.
Had the drills been run by steam, the
presence of steam engines constantly
generating smoke and gas would have
heated and vitiated the air still further.
By the new invention the difficulty was
met. The air was compressed outside
of the tunnel, and conveyed into it by
pipes. Here a double purpose was served:
by its expansion and liberation tho air
ran the drills, and ventilated tho tunnel.

Ventilation of the Capitol.
Mr. Edward Clark, the architect of the
Capitol for some years, and who, I be¬
lieve, is a New England man, has done
wonder.; in heating and ventilating the
building, which hail not the smallest per¬
foration for either heat or ventilation,
according to the modern plan. Great
fans in the cellar pump up many thou¬
sand cubic feet of air into the house and
senate chambers. A network of pipes
conveys heat where heat was never
meant to be. The only provision made
for fireplaces heating tho building was big open
- and to this day in the corridors
may be seen the long, high wooden boxes
in which the oak and hickory logs were
kept that blazed up the chimneys in the
days of tho fathers. There are yet many
vast fireplaces at the Capitol in which a
generous wood fire glows and sparkles—
none of y»mr little piles of Jiindling wood,
but old time back logs, supported on
largo firedogs of three generations back.
The commit me rooms all have open fires,
either of coal or wood, as the chairman
Of the committee selects.—Washington

Tlie Fight Between Messrs. Scott and
Randall In Pennsylvania.
U ashington, Mar. 1.— [Special.]
Win. H. Barnum, of Connecticut,
Chairman ol the Democratic Nation
al Committee, has had his day. In
the .ate meeting of the committee he
bad less influence than the smallest
member. It is fit and proper that
Barnum should he retired. He was
never of much use, and did more
than any one man in the country to
distort and misrepresent the princi
pics of the Democratic party. He is,
and has always been, a protectionist,
and, with the exception, perhaps, of
Mr. English, did more to bring about
the disaster of 1880 than any man in
the country, by the ridiculous change
ot front he compelled General Han
cock to take on the tariff question.
1 he \\ ashington representatives ol
of ihe leading Republican papers
throughout the country have entered
into a conspiracy to force the Nation
al Democratic Convention to oorni
nate Gen. John C. Black for Vice
President. To accomplish this, their
plan is io shower upon him the mast
outrageous and shameful abuse.

the FIGHT LET WEEN MESSRS. SCOTT

and exciting.|T he county conventions
arc now being held throughout the
State to appoint delegates to tho
State convention in May. Mr. Scott
is working to obtain a majority of tl •

straightout tariff reform plank. Mr.
Randall on the other hand, is work
ing to prevent this. The situation
is interesting. The Democrats of
Blair counnty, on Saturday,
elected delegates to the State
convention to choose delegates
at large to the Democratic
National Convention. The result
was a sweeping victory for Congress
man Scott and revenue reform, al

ANOTHER NEW
( El). UiMMO-fl. “UITEE I’S
j GOOSE,
And Tells Mow te Get Rielt aud Im¬
prove the Country at the
Same Time.
A News reporter dropped mto
ihe Ordinary’s office and found
Honor in good spirits. Well,
what news? said the News man.
Judge took a fresh cigar and when
he had fired it, said:
Weft, Searcy and Bill Sullivan are
going to have a railroad of their own
at last. It is a fixed fact, for Bill
Sullivan told me so himself. Bat
let me tell you. We want something
that will bring money and cotton
and people to Griffin and not contin
ually carry away wbat we already
have. Factories of all kinds of
home industries will do because they
keep dollars at home and people at
borne and like lode stooes, borne dol
lars and home people will attract
other dollars and other people, and
if we don’t get rich, we will at least
have more money and more people
and more fun. It is uu erroneous
idea that we are poor 'and in a bad
fix and can’t make money. Nobody
is poor who enjoys good health and
lives in a healthy country, surround
ed by schools and cburcheB and good
society. The truth is we haven’t
got the vim and go-achead deter
ruination which make men indepond
ent and rich. Men who have made
mouey, have told me when they
once determined to make money it
was easy enough to do. Why,
few days ago I spent the day
Dr. Oscar Bailee, a friend of mine,
who has made himself rich in
years ia this county. Four
ago he came into my office t«
me examine the titles to u tract
land he wished to buy, 200 acres. I
examined the title and told him the
title was all right, but that the land
was hilly, worn out and poor, but
mighty rocky. He said he could buy
it cheap and on easy terms and that
it had numerous springs and branch
es on it and that was what he want
ed. He bougLt it. I asked hina
what he wanted with it. He said be
would f-bow me some of these days.
Sometime after this I called to see
him aud he had selected an elogan)
dam site and so built his dam as to
withstand tho rush of raging floods
and had a beautiful pond covering
about fifteen acres, which he had al
ready stocked with carp. He had
bought a thousand geese and was
still baying all be could. Tue third
and fourth years be shipped and
sold for good price* large quantities
of Ids carp ant? is now receiving a
good income from his fowls. But
what I would mall special attention
to is the Doctors wonderful man
agement of bis geese. When I
spent the day with him a short time
ago, he told mo he had bad good
luck with his geese-, that the fust
year they increased very rapidly and
had continued to increase all tbe
time, and from the first, he had pas
tured them od the various sections
or plats < f his land for a certain
time- and would then change then
to another and another until they
had made hij old, worn out, poor,
hills, fertile fields and gteen pas
tures. The Doctor said he bad prac
ticed medicine in a western city,
where most of the people would not
eat bog meat, nor use bog laid, but
used batter instead and the grease
extracted from fat geese, which
was considered a very rich
and rare delicacy. So he
j conceived the idea of coming
South and going into the goose
grease business- He came and has
made a perfect success of it; has
paid for bis land-, has built an ele
gant residence and ont bouses to
correspond and is -Baking money

the richest, ^fattest, nicest, baked
goose that OTer tickled a hungry
man’s palate. He told me tnat he
was satisfied wbat was lo him an ex
periinent four years ago, was now
an assured success. He said be
bad sold large shipments of feathers
for a good price; bis goeso had en
riehod bis lands - , ho bad made much
money from the salo of enlarged
goose livers, which aio called “fatted
on fat grass” and which always
brought fancy prices, but above all
bis great hubby was goose grease.
He bad given the subject so much
study and attention that be felt that
be bad it down to one of the exact
sciences. He said by bis new meth
od of fattening, two gallons of pure
strained goose grease was an ordina
ry yield for each fowl and frequently
the yield was three gallons and be
bad orders for more than bis farm
conld supply at high prices- Each
goose is fattened in a dark box or
hogshead and is not allowed to see
the light except while being fed, and
by bis new method it requires about
six weeks to complete tho process.
When thoroughly fattened a tube
ol metal is inserted in tbe skin under
the breast and tbe goose is then
placed in a compartment heated by
dry hot air, its head allowed to re
main ont; and as the bird begins to
get Lot the fat begins to inelt and
run out) in a stream of pure, crystal,
rich goose grease. When the fat iB
all drawn off that will come, tbe bird
is killed and dressed and then a liver
is taken out which weighs from six
to eight pounds, a rich aud sweet
morsel for those epicures who are
always ready to pay fancy prices for
these delicacies; then tbe bird itself
is salted and packed away by the
Doctor's new method and will keep
for years and remarkable to relate
it will never be stale or rancid. The
Doctor intends enlarging his farm
and to show wbat can be done on
poor laud and small capital backed j
by energy and vim.

TIMELY AND TO THE POINT.
Useful huggestious to the Publie About
fending Moeejr iu Letters.
D d you ever lose money in a let
ter or have any difficulty or delay ia
getting your mail ?
If so, stop a minute and see if you
arw not to be blamed. If you will
call on Postmaster Bowdoin, he wili
give you some points and tell you
how many p' ople make mistakes of
various kinds. And he furnishes
some good ** 1 timely suggettitfti to
the public.
Do not put money in ordinary
letters.
The proper way to send money bv
mail is by a money order or r-
,
eA letter. Sent in any other «»y u
te aiuu-ti certain that it will be
stolen, tbe letter containing it de-
sfoyed and no trace of it ever found.
The postal service is not responsible
for these losses and steadily endeavor
to discourage sending money iu ordi
nary letters. The more sent the
greater is the temptation. The ex
pert thief can usually tell whether
a letter contains money by its feeling,
but if he opens a letter to steal be
has to destroy it, whether it contains
money or not, so that those who per
sist in sending loose bills in lettera
not merely rnn their own risk but
tempt men who might otherwise re
main honeat. Sensible people do
not send money in that way. All
valuable packages should be regie
teretl, as tho cost is enly ten cent*
more than tbe ordinary^posuge, end
they cannot be lost.
File your address - the poet
master.
If you change you. > l ienee you
should notify the Postmaster. ‘Per¬
sons often move into a new piece end
the Postmaster never heart of them
until they come into the office in e
rage to find out the reason why their
mail is not delivered promptly.
Promptly report any losses end de
lays in the Postal Service. Every
Postmaster who takes an interest in
bis office is glad to get such reports,
unless they are unreasonable, because
they show him the weak spots. Let
tsrs are misdirected in the most ex
traordinary manner, by tbe best edu
cated and most careful people. One
of tho commonest errors is to address
a letter to a firm in another city, with
the name of one’s own office.
