Tbe motto with which the He publican opponents of the tariff bill will adorn their banner—“Free list positively saepended” —will not be popular with newspaper men. A SPECIMEN BRICK. Senator Vest offered several amend Bents on the day of its passage by tbe Senate to the bill chartering the Nicaragua Canal Company, which were voted down by solid Hepubli can majorities. One amendment stipulated that tbe Company should buy all its iron and steel and other materia! and implements.in the Unit ed States, and another that ail labo era employed rhould be citizens ol the United States. These amend meats were tabled by big Republi can and high tariff majorities, as well as another amendment of the Senator that if ten per cent, of the capital stock be not paid in within two years, aud if work do not actually begin in four years the charter should lapse. The defeat of the latter amendment gives tbe Company an indeGnite frao cbiac to the projected route and might create an opportunity for a large speculation at tbe expense of tome bona fide undertaking of this country or any other. There was net a Republican vote in the r ega live on the final passage, which makes the scheme look a little peculiar, cs pecially when we find all tbe names among the opponents of Vest's amend ment* that are most prominent in x!l bigh-tariff legislation for the bene fit of the people of their own beloved country. This farored enteprise was carefully guarded from tbe neces ity of buying tariff taxed material and implements, and empioyiag tariff pro tected labor by the very men who never tire of proclaiming that this country owes its wonderful prosperi ty to tbe priv.lcge of buying and us ing tariff protected merchandise and labor. The farmer, especially, as the Ual Seuator of them is ready to swear, would be a lost man, commercially, without that privilege from which they, each and all, voted to exempt their pet scheme inJsicarag'i* Ob, tbe hypocrites 1 But the capping stone was put on the humbug by Senator Teller, who pompously announced that the com pany should be allowed to buy their material, implements and labor in any country where they could buv tbem cheapest and “they could buy j tbem cheapest and best in the Unit *d JfiUtes. It is no dcuut ihe ex cee«ltnp .. re.sUve , . cheapness , ol sr,*n. i .W.I ,.d in the l otted States that always secures Teller’s vote in defense of protective duties of 35 to 100 percent. There are one hundred and thirteen article* or classes of arti cie« placed co the free list, principal among them being wool and timber. Southern farmers will be glad to \ learn that cotton tagging and ties i • will also be relieved from duly if this ’ bill passes Whether it shall pass or not, it clearly and boldly, though wisely and conservatively, formulates the ieane, sod tbe battle will aeon be precipitated. There is no question wcere crery true Democrat will be found enlisted What tbe Atlanta Constitution so well said io 1883, I we repeat in 1888 The Constitu tioo said- “The democratic cam paign in 1884 will he fongbt and won on the issue of revision and re dnetion of taxation, and this is the tariff issue. The congressional cam paigns in which tbe democrats were { so generally victorious, were fought and won on that issue; there is no other issue in which the people are so vitally interested. There maybe democrats like Mr. Sam Randall who will not care to folfow the democratic party to victory on that line, but where one democrat will oalt by tbe wayside, a hundred republicans will cut loose from their corrupt organ izition. If the democratic party cannot win on the tariff issue, it can ! net win at all.” ADVERTISE Ol K SECTION.
