Whila tbe Telegraph ts bragging
of Haooo'a nine railroads, let os not
allow Griffin's fire to ba forgottan.
These can he no question about the
sincerity of the Macon Telegraphs
advocacy of tariff reform after its
publication of the twenty*one solid
colamns of Colqaitt‘s speech.
The Governor of Texas has an

There is an increased demand
among the farmers for tariff Uteri
tore- Some Congressman should
explain bow a high protection tariff
r pabaa farm mortgages, and hare ser
oral million copies of his speech print
•d and distributed.
Congress has been talking about
Western farm mortgages- It is a
•object of some importance. There
•re also numerous farm mortgages
in the South. Does Congress pro
prose to bring relief to the farmers
by pusing a tariff redaction bill?
It is dangerous to put a snow
plow on a Northern railroad. No
sooner is the*enow plowed away
than a train mas into the plow and
kills everybody connected with the

suited to railroading.

Atlanta is asking for half rates on
all railroads leading into the place
in order that the people may be in
duced to trade there. No doubt
some inducement of this kind is tree
ernry, bnt what Atlanta really needs
is reduced rates to Griffin, in order
that its citizens may have an oppor
tnnity to see first class goods sold
at feMehable prices.
The Washington reporter cf the
New York Evening Post says that
the Republicans will resort to all
available parliamentary tactics to de
lay action on the Mills Tariff Bill,
and that Mr. Randall, being chair
man of the appropriations committee
(whose bills are generally awarded
precedence) can do much to assist
them in this game. No appropria
tion bill has yet finally passed, and
the need of early action on some of
them may b« urged to justify compe
tition to prior consideration of the
tariff bill.

Regarding the great trusts, some
of which are now the subject of leg
eiatift investigation, the Grange
Lecturer usee the following forcible
e*
multiplication of peat trade
oonspiraoiee, called t rusts, formed
upon the model afforded by the Stan
dard Oil monopoly, sets before the
people of this country a problem
which, in defense of their rights,
they most soon undertake to solve.
A trust is a combination devised for
the establishment and maintenance
of a monopoly in such a way that
the real design of its founders and
the operation of its machinery are
In a great measure concealed from
the public. Absolutely controlling
a large number of corporations which
•eem to be independent of each other,
monopoly in this form presents to
the world the features of ordinary
competition. But behind tne mask
there is only monopoly, heartless, ty
rannieal and oppressive. The trusts
of these days are not corporations,
but by usurping the franchises of
many corporations they exert, with
out the restraining infience of char
ter regulations, enormous power.
They are monopolies of monopolies.
As an illustration of the harden of
taxation these trusts can impose on
the people of this country for their
own exclusive benefit, take that of
the sugar refiners. It is estimated
that this country annually consumes
about 3,000,000,000 pounds of sugar.
An advance in the price for one year
of only one cent a pound would then
sitnpij take from the consumers an
extra $30,000,000—quite a nice little
item to divide among comparatively
a few large dealers, the majority of
whom are on the inside of the com
bine.
An Atlanta special to tha Colum

ic committee, which was iu session
yesterday, and of (ho politicians pre
sent npon tho scene, that Governor
Gordon aud the present State House
officials would be renominated with
out opposition. There could be found
no sign of opposition to the return
of Senator Colquitt to the United
States Senate. AmoDg the eandi
dates mentioned from the State at
large, to the St. Lonis convention,
were: Messrs. F. G. D uBignon, of
Savannah: Hoke Smith, of Atlanta;
A. 8. Erwin, of Athens-, W. A. Lit
tie, of Columbus, and A. D. Abrams,
of LaGrange. The commtttee
heartily agreed with President Cleve
land's message, but thought it best
to make no official endorsement, and
to let the party iu State Convention
take such action as it saw fit.
