Hte Views on Types of Manhood as Af¬
fected by Natural Advantages.
Atlanta. April 6—Qnite a noia
bor of Atlanti ins assembled in the
council chamber yesterday at noon to
■bear Mr. Eiwant Atkinson, of Bos
ton, speak. He wan introduced bv
Co!. E P. Hovv ( II in a short speech,
de chose as his subject ‘ Do natural
advantages develop tfie* best type of
manhood*"
Among oilier ih ngs, he said:
The purpose of life is to develop
men. Whore v\ii! the best type of
men be developed bereaflei? In
whic'' section, aye, even in ’vhich
race, will the best qualities r>t man
kind be biougbt out? I am far fioai
sure that tljo lies? tu tierial advantag
es wili develop tne be..i. type of man.
Whether on the whole to be without
great natural resources won’t tend
to develop more fully tho qualities
of men is a question which has en
gaged the thought of New England.
Down here in Pennsylvania and
South yon have the original vureu
tiau shale, elements o! fertility. All
through your Atlanfc coast your
shell formation, v. ich a New Eng
land man the '•;* will grow only
mulliea staks. upou that I t< uod the
greatest yield of substance for beasts
that I have ever found. Subjected,
as you were, to the burden of slay
dry, hot touch wus to be expected
until your country was bom again
in 1863, 1864 and 1865. You have
just reached the adult age. Perhaps
it is an udvantnge to me not to come
oftener, to observe the great pro
gress of ’the country. With all
former habits of thought overthrown,
with no inherited capital, the whole
system revolutionized and changed
and subjected to the competition of
inherited application, and yet in
these twenty-one years 3 'our indus
tries have come to adult growth.
In tbe exchangee, State with State
and section with section, there will
be the survival of the Attest. You
are. passing through the first stage
of great individual foituue?. The
disjecta membra of your railroads
aie brought together as they were in
the North. Then the wealth of tbe
individual results in the advantage
of all. Then comes better service
for lower prices, and close economy,
bringing to bear all the Bkill and
knowledge that can be applied. To
this period you have not come.
You have the greatest iron deposits
in the world, and now I see little
shops springing up all around.
Here we have sixty millions of
^people, among whom the common
school is becoming the solvent. You
will have to look to it that your col
ored men don’t become better
mechanics than you.
What is the difficulty of dealing
with the trained negro compared to
that of dealing with a foreign popu
lation carrying with them the seed
of socialism and anarchy? We have
a vastly harder problem than yon.
Mr. \tkirson said that it gave him
courage to see the colored people ac
quiring property in the South.

A Bostoh writer tells a nice story
about how he found among the wretched,
bedraggled horses of the fish peddlers a
faultless saddle mare. It tspo^-iUe for
the most excellent and most lovable ani-
mals to fall into the * hands of brutal
masters, and' die "unliOnoml and un¬
sung.” But good care and skillful hand-
ling would restore many such. If the
story puts hundreds of kindly people on
the watch to rescue possible j>ets from
the crowds of animals that drudge about
our city streets, with all the spirit of a
noble horse beaten out by beetle headed
owners, it will fulfill the evident object
of the writer.—Globe-Democrat.
Hallway Station in Bouio.
The tracks of all the roads leading from
the country palaces to the capital, over
which tha czar may travel, are patroled
by soldiers, and one can see tents all
along the line at intervals of a few hun¬
dred yards. This precaution is made
necessary by the many attempts that have
been made to wreck trains on which
members of the imperial family have
been or have been supposed to be passen¬
gers. There was one terrible danger
from this source which will never be for¬
gotten, as well as several escapes from
less peril—William Eleroy (\irtis in
Chicago News.
The Strength of Wood.
In a paper on the strength of different
kinds of wood for building purposes,
Professor Johnson calls attention to the
fact, as now demonstrated, that many
cheaper kinds of timber may prove more
valuable for structures than more ex¬
pensive varieties, which have been sup¬
posed to be stronger, and, therefore,
more desirable. Tlius, pine supports or
pillars have been found stronger than
oak oneB, when tested in large samples.

The Century is very nice in its methods
with its contributors, both active and

done nowhere else in this country. Then,
in about six weeks a decision is reached,
