THE RECORD OP HAT [ H DA I NIGHT IN GRIFFIN. , i _____ A Regular Fail lade ( noses the Dearth j i ef a Nacre 3ta« and a >>gre Went an. ; ___ j The firing of gan# and piatois . which baa been going on in Griffin j at nigbta for some inontba past, un til it has become a regnlar practice, on Saturday night brought fourth its legitimate fruit, apd yesterday morning Baw two coroners inquests . as the Conan] see. The result* ■ f these inquests are : herewith Five; ;n full. ; The fir t inquest was upon the body of Dock Thrash, a negro who lived nearly opposite Dr. Anthony’s house, ou Taylor street, and who '^ et ^ a * b ’ x o c ' oc ^ morning j from the effect of a wooud received on Saturday night. Coroner Latta summoned the following jury: M. J. Patrick, W. H. Hammond, Charley Floyd, W. H. F . W. T. Cole, J. P. Champion, H- X Jones J. W. Bolton, Chas. Bowden, J. Q. Word, J. W. Hunton, and Bod]. F- Lawson. M. J- Patrick was made foreman of the body. The first witness was Geo. Dickensou, the colored watch man. who te tified that about ten o’clock on S .l iny night Marshall Manloy hail < red him to go to West Griffin an i see about tbe re ported shooting of a woman Abe Ransom went with him and they had got as far as Mrs. Wheaton's lot when a man turned from R. A. Har dee‘8 corner and as he turned an other man came from the corLer of Judge Stewart's lot toward the first one and fired as he came. When the shot was fired the first man cried “Ob, Mr, Frank Ison, you Lave shot me !•* The shot man, who was Dock Thrasb. the deceased, broke to run towards Stewart's gate. Tbe other kept advancing upon him and fired the second shot, when Thrash hollered "Oh Mr. Ison!*' again At the third shot Thrash fell and cried for help, Dickenson ran over to him and as he did so the other man went on back towards Mr, Hardee's. Dickenson picked up Thrash, While Abe Ransom ran toward the man who did tbe shoot ing and found Frank Ison standing at Haidee's corner, who upon Ran¬ som speakiDg to him went qd up to ward the John Williams place, on Poplar street. Ransom then turned back to Dickenson who was calling him, and together they help ed the wounded man home. Thrash bad a shot gun, but the witnesses testified that it bad no triggers, and that he did not attempt to fire it I)r. T. J, Collier testified that the deceased had a wound on the left side about midway between the spine and the sturnum and touching tbe eighth rib. It #as a gunshot wound and the ball was traced downward aud backward, passing between the ribs and skin, but was iost track of just below the surface of the 12th rib. He believed that it turned in ward and caused death. There was another flesh wound in the hip. Tbe verdict of the jury was that Dock Thrash came to his death from s gun shot wound inflicted by Frank j gon Au iDquest was immediately there after held ou the body of Susan Cot ton, a negro woman who lives just opposite J. D. Boyd’s residence, and who died at 10 o’clock yesterday morning from the same fata! syrup toms that curried off Dock Thrash, The jury impannelled was partially the same, being M. J. Patrick, J. M. Woods, W. T. Cole, J. I’. Cbampioo, S. S. Gaillaird, J. M. Gossett, H. A. Jones, Wrn. Reeves. Chne. McFar land, >V. H. Hammond, R. H. Drake and J. W. BcdtoD. M. J. Patrick was (Again elected foreman. ;-'»•>* iiob.ru w.s ,b, witness who testified to much ID i this case, except the doctor, aud she di.Wr t«ll much She said she didn’t i know who did the shooting. She j ’ rented part of the house with Susan Cotton _ , and both of them sit 1 i were I ting around the fire, together with Dock Thrasb, when aloog about nice somebody commenced to into the house. Nobody, accord I went ont the window and the wit ness ran into the next room and wua beiug followed by tLe Cotton woman when ‘the shot was tired that killed her. Sue didn’t see anybody who ehot and didn’t know whether any shots were fired from the in fll j e bc-jug too frightened to know anything- Thrash bad a shotgun in t he house, but sbedidn*. know whether it was in shooting order. Cotton was a peaceable woman nnd jj a( j Q0 q aarr i>i 8 that she knew of. Dr. Collier said that he found in the left lumbar region a wound of eu trance and in the corresponding right lumbar region a wound of exit, caused by a ball or ballet, evidently p a g 8 jog beneath the muscles of the abdomen and probably wounding peritoneum and cutting some hlood vessels, as there seemed to be e ,ij ence G f death from slow hetnor r h a g e . The wound was evidently the cause of the death Thu jury found drat Susan Cotton came to her death from a gun 6hot Woan j f a ud that said wound was in flj c tecl by parties unknown to the The parties living in the neighbor hood aud from a ieng distance off heard the noise of the shooting. and the house is ikldled with bullet holes, while near the door is a large hole caused by the simultaneous fir ing of. both barrels of a shotgun from tbe inside. Frank Ison had been placed un der bond earlier in the evening for shooting ou tho streets. He has not been seen anywhere since the killing of Tbiasb on Saturday even ing. Thrash and the woman Cotton were both of bad character, and nei ther will be greatly missed from the community, although this can not be pleaded as excuse for Heir r der. The whole is a most deplorable affair and serves to give Griffin tern porarily a very unsavory reputation. An Important Arrest. The arrest of a suspicious character upon his general appearance, move mente or companionship, traveler, without fired wait ing uutil he has robbed a a house, or murdered a fellow-man, is an important function of a shrewd de tective. Even mo o impoitunt is the ar rest of a disease which, if not checked, will blight and destroy a human life. The frequent cough, loss of appetite, general languor or debility, pallid skin, and bodily aches and pains, announce the approach of primptly pulmonary arrested consnmp and tiou, which is permanently cured by Dr. Pierce’s •‘Golden Medical Discovery.’’ Bold by druggists. A Sad Death. We are pained to announce the death of Seaton Grantland. Jr., son of our Hod. Mayor, who died yester day at 12 o'clock after several days illness of a combination of brain fe ver and miningetis. The little suf ferer had every attention that medi ica! science could give, but the an gels called him home where pain and sorrow is not known. The sad stricken parents have our sympa thies.
