The best variety comes from near Dallas, Tex., where they are taken out of the nests while young and fed by hand. The mocker is the only bird that can whistle a tune successfully, and it takes only a short time to teach one 6uch a tune as “Lauterbacb. ” The redbird is tho hardest bird known to keep, as he will butt his brains out in a cage if not cared for properly. He » a hearty bird if he survives the first season, but it is necessary to change the cage frequently from a high to a low point, then from outdoors to indoors. All redbirds are trapped, and then they sing only after becoming thoroughly tamed. The black¬ bird is rarely seen as a cage bird. The American blackbird is a i>oor pet, but (lie European variety is highly prized. It lias a song peculiarly of its own. Wealthy people are lately importing Eng¬ lish skylarks in large numbers. It is sad to have to acknowledge that tea majority of tho schemes for bettering the condition of tbo working millions are worse than useless. They sometimes do actual harm. Thera is a way, however, that money can be spent advantageously for the benefit of the toilers. Cornelius Vanderbilt has appropriated a large sum of money to build a club house for the employes of the New York Central Railway company who work around New York. In this club the men are furnished refreshments and oppor¬ tunities for innocent recreation at a trifling expense. If a lady must needs enter a confectionary store, library, or other place where men natur¬ ally go, and finds a gentleman or two there, she feels compelled to retire as pre¬ of cipitately as if she had seen a case smallpox. The men know this, but un¬ less they have finished their business they will not retire. The lady retreats in the most undignified manner, and the human bear finishes his book or his chocolate, even though the lady is at the door wait¬ ing for him to leave.—Home Journal.
