A LITTLE WANT, or a big one is promptly filled by ad¬ vertising in the Daily or Weekly NEWS. t»Er;. stonewall jacx&on. lived to full manhood or womanhood.- Thin is Often true of the dearest friends, and always of great leaders and men cf eminent talents in any walk of life. Lee, at Appo¬ mattox, was then a sad sight; tbo mimorv of his dignified bearing uud manly resignation i-A now an unalloyed pleasure. Ask any veteran of the Army of Virginia, on this \ J \y ■- 1 - GEN. LEE. Decoration Day, what he would take for his recollection of Gen. Robert E. Leo! Suppose a memory could bo bartered and ask this: What money would hire you to blot out that mind picture of our noble comxnander ns we have often seen him on horseback among us? How much, to make your mind as if yon had never seen Oen. Lee? If he did not take the question as an insult and answer with a blow, be would certainly say that there was one possession no money could buy. Who that grew familiar with the heroic figure of Thomas Jonathan Jackson, as he rode at the head of his column in the stirring summer of 18S3, would part with that mem¬ ory now? Every veteran who can recall the sceno considers the memory among his dearest possessions. And it has a value which ar thmetic cannot measure; it ennobles the man; the thought “I was w-ith Jackson at iff OEN. JOE JOHNSTON. such a place’’ still makes his bosom swell with pride—still makes him feel that he is dis¬ tinguished among men and has that pictured in his memory which allies him with heroes. Jackson’s career of glory was quickly run. Before Bull Run ho was only known as “one of the new brigadiers,” and not quite two years after it he received his mortal wound; yet what wonderful achievements wero crowded into that short period. The world will never willingly forget them. Even be¬ fore the war closed the soldiers opposed to him frankly conceded his greatness, and now his fame is a part of the common gloryof the country. Stonewall Jackson had graduated with a rather low rank from West Point in 1S40, and, though twice brevetted for gal¬ lantry in Mexico, was but little known. As professor of philosophy and artillery tactics in the Virginia Military institute, he became known merely as a conscientious and pains¬ taking official and teacher. But all these years ho was growing, and when the- grand opportunity came his inherent greatness was shown. There are those who imagine that an exist¬ ing condition will always exist, and hence that the old sectional lines will be maintained Jackson and their col- m.-; ■ . A -• OEN. J. B. GORDON. leagues will always he the peculiar glory ot the south, Grant and Hancock of the north; It is a shallow and unpatriotic view. It will never be in America as in Ireland, where feuds of race and section have purposely been prolonged; but it will be us in Scotland, where the heroic achievements of Saxon and Gael. Lowland and Highland, Jacobite and Hanoverian are thrown into a common stock and are the common glory of the coun¬ try. In no part of Walter Scott’s works do bis line* sareii t<» a more sublime strain than when to paints the achievements of the Gaelics tun over men of his own race and religion. No man loved Scotland more than ! It*, -■at he looted upon the past without preju¬ dice and felt a pride in oil heroic Scotch¬ men. So will it be in America— nay, so it now is in many sections. Another of our heroes whoso u.ci.. -ry is a pleasure was Ambrose Powell Hill. Uprose to .......... prominence more slowly than Stono- - wo n Jackson It j was lib, sad fate to fall by tlio shot of a straggler o u I v i one Week before | the surrender. It , is claimed that no / ! general in the Con j federacy vva s in' more battles and skirmishes than OE.V. MILL. Gen Hill. He was A. I\ but ouci> severely wounded and rapidly re¬ covered. and though once granted leave of absence he returned to duty before bis leave expired; thus lie was almost continuously in service, frequently getting into a brittle by a forced march, from May 1, 1801, t-> ’.pril 2, 1805. when he received bis death si,.- t. By a hero,, charge his body was recovered and finally laid in Hollywood cemetery, Rieh- tnonif. Considering tbo high rate of mortality in the war, that twenty-three years have passed since it closed, and that the I adors in it wero necessarily men of mature age, it Is really surprising that wo liavo’so many of them among us today Lieut. Gen. and Governor John Brown Gordon is but W years old, -still in tbo prime of life, and fit to serve Georgia many more years; yet bo has experienced moro than most men would in a century. Eight times wounded in tbo war, he is still not disabled; and if it ho permitted to sjiecu late on such a matter, wo might guess that bo would be among tho latest surviving gen¬ erals of the great conflict. Gen. Longstreet is older and feels more of tbo infirmities of age. Gen. Joseph E. Johnston is a fine speci¬ slill men of- tbo vigorous old gentleman, active in the service of his country. But time ami space would fail us to tell of the many worthy survivors. Wo close with tho hope that ou this Decoration day all feelings of estrangement may bo laid aside, that all differences arising out of recent ]>olitics may bo ignored, and that the old radical and old conservative may clasp warm hands above tlieir comrade.-.’ graves and remember only tbo liju.v when they fought together in a com¬ mon < ause. ••ROUGH ON PITsRH.>- LiV jfet 1 lffnr I !n tea jornpletecure Piles."
