See it that only tariff reform of pronounced views are sent to lanta. Fred Douglass having stated the condition of the Degro in the Sonili is worse now than at any time since tlio war, William Smalley (colored), iu a letter to the Augusta Chronicle, dentes tbo statement, and reminds Douglass that he has said a good deal about politics in trying to prove bis assertion, hat nothing about the increase of wealth aud the advancement in education on the part of the negroes. Ho warns Donghws to hold up with his talk and show his interest by coming South to try and establish manufac¬ tories whero the negro will bo given employment. Tbo point is well made, but it will have no effect upoD Republican politicians who talk about tho negioes for political effect. The Chicago Tribune, in its fran¬ tic endeavor to show that North erners are ostracised in tho South, has got itself into a box. The other day a person walked into the Tribune office and told n story of his having been forced to leave Humboldt, Ten nesaoe, because he was a Northern man and subscriber to tbo Tribune. HiB absurd story was printed with great particularity, and tbo names of oertain citizens of Humboldt were given as composing u band of ku klux, whoso purpose was to lynch tho Northerner. Now for the real facts in the case. The person in question had lived aud prospered in Humboldt, as other Northern men done, and ho left that town because of his tendency toward polygamy. He bad one wife too many, and she made matters so warm for him that fled. The citizens who were meu tinned iib kukiux by the Tribune are preparing to bring suit for libel. t lay ton’s Mass Meeting. Tbo action of the mass meeting belli at the courthouse on last Satnr day lifts been the chief topic of con vi-rsatiou during the past few days wIu*rover a parcel of men happened to get together, and it is plain to see there is much dissatisfaction at the action. We tbink we hazard noth ing in saying that tho meeting lacked much of being n tepresen tntive meeting, and that none of our friends on the other side of the tariff question can claim that, the meeting was representative of tho great uisbs of Clayton County Democrats. — [Clayton County Herald. His policy is to revise the prraeui tariff system and remove, a« far as practicable, the bur den r r ‘station imposed upon neef foaries of life. lie is commuted to this policy, and his party is com mitted to it, and roust stand or fall upon it. There is reason fur suspect ing that when the Georgia I lemocrat i ic Convention meets in Atlanta on [ the bth of May to elect delegates to the St. I.ouis Convention, a set of compromise resolutions will be offer cd by the handful of noisy Protec tionists in the State. Their plan will be to indorse Cleveland express Jy indorsing his tariff reform mes sage. Such a compromise was pre posed by Maj. J. F. Hanson, in the Bibb County Convention, the other day, but was very promptly and prop erly voted down. Lookout for the Protectionists and their compromise resolutions at Atlanta, and let them be given a respectful hearing and then promptly and emphatically laid upon the table News and Cooriei: A Georgia re giment, the only one, we are glad to know, who fought ou the Union side during the war, is now looking to the United States treasury for relitf —in a word, its survivors want to be placed on the pension rolls. The re giment was “never recognized as a regular military corps, nod conse qnently received no pay,” but now that the way tr the treasury seems easy, and the ‘ old soldier element” is disposed to pay everybody aud everything that belonged to the army or straggled along after it, these Georgians come inarching along twenty three years after the war and join the robber baud. It is said that the Secretary of War has notified the Georgia representatives that he cauuot recommend the pay ment of these soldiers uow and that the hill for their relief will fail. We hope so. Are the pousion raids never to cease? After a while “Union men” will be springing up all over the South asking that they be paid for their fidelity to the flag. .\ Narrow 1 Jones was so awkward the oilier even¬ ing as to sit down on a gentleman's silk hat, crushing it Halter than a i»ancake. “And to think,’’ ".is his comment, “that it might have been the new one I’ve just bought!”- Judge. <»t‘ the Klpctriu Current.
