In ad¬ dition to the seventeen day’s de¬ bate, which was begun this week, > thousands of copies of speeches here tofore fV'ivered have been scattered - over the country. The President’s mes-age leads the other tariff docu¬ ments in circulation, one and a half million copies of it having already been distributed, with the prospect that a nvilion more will be sent out before November. About -80,000 copies of the majority report of the Ways and Means Committee were subscribed for by the Congressmen, and 100,000 copies of Mr. Mills’ speech, opening the tariff debate, were distributed. Mr Kelley's re¬ ply was not so much in demand, only about 40,000 copies of it be¬ ing callod lor. The tariff speech of Senator Frye was sent out to the number of 300,000, and that of Sen¬ ator Sherman to 200,000. Senator Colquitt’s speech was evidently well thought of, for 180,000 copies of it were demanded, while about the same number of that of Representa¬ tive Nelson wore called for. These documents cost the Congressmen not less than *2,50 a thousand. A profitableraarket h as been lound for the poor, despised American red oak that has been considered of to value at all, says the Chicago Herald. American dealers are buying up all they can get hold of and shipping it to Liverpool. There the lumber is manufactured into fancy furniture and shipped back to New York, where it is sold to wealthy people as the real Knglisb ouk, and at pretty stiff prices too. The Atlanta Journal run the Ful ton County convention on Thursday night and no Constitution man even applied. It was a very harmonious and unanimous affair, and endorsed Jack J. Spalding, of Atlanta, as a del egato from this congressional dis trict, with resolutions favoring Cleve land, Colquitt and Stewart. I a) stamps th« People Never See. A woman who haa the craze for stamp collecting called at the Bangor postoflice recently and said she wanted to buy ■Vnmo of the stamps which are canceled when postage is jiaid on regular publica¬ tions. " It is against the rule to sell these stamps, and the woman’s remark led to an investigation by an inspector. Ac¬ cording to a rule of the department, mail matter prepaid is receipted in a book, which is sent to Washington when filled. Stamps of a particular sort were placed on the receipts and canceled. As they were never allowed to go from the office they were of course of great value to cot- lecton*. The inspector found that the ix>ok hail been taken by an employe, who believed it to lie of no value. He sold them and found eager customers for them Whatever he had on hand he gave to the inspector who called on him. It is just as important, exclaims II o leading Republican organ of the State, to retain Michigan in the Ito publican column as it is to win back New Jersey or Indiana. The way to do i tie is to select Michigan's CACKudato as the nowinco of the par ty for President. With Gen. Alger as the candidate there would be no doubt ns to Michigan. Alas! alas! and bus it corno to this? Ib it necessary for the Republicans to nominate Michigan's favorite son in order to retain that State in the Republican colnrun—Michigan which has passer! into proverbial history us the Stale which any Republican can carry, and which not so long ago contd bo depended on at any time to return any kind of majority, useful or ornamental, for the g. o. p.? If it is necessary to nominate Alger to save Michigan, then what is ihe party going to do about the other States, which aro just as es seniml to Republican success as Michigan? What will it avail the pur ty it it mvo Michigan and Ioeo ludi Hua? Must not Harrison bo nominat ed to securo Indiana? Must not Ai hfaon bo nominatod to savo Iowa? And who js going to insure Wiscon s;n to the Republicans unless Itusk shall bo nominated? Then there is Now York-, isn’t Depew the only Re public’n who stands any chance of carrying that State* He, too, must bo nominated, therefore. Connecti cut went for Cleveland in 1881, atd to be regained Hawley must be norm nnt d. And what Republican can carry New Jersey, unless it bo Wil linm Walter Phelps? While they do say that even California is not safo unless Stanford with hts barrel head the ticket, and Illinois is so fast be gaming to be looked upon as a doubt fni State that it would be highly ad visable to make sure of its vote by nominating either Lincoln or Gres ham, Ibo latter of whom is so much better appreciated at his trne worth in lilir.o s than he is in bis o.vn S: i!e. which it Mats on trying to make a silk puss3 out of Harrison. ths Republican party is evidently in a very embarrassing predicament, and us yet it does not seem to have discovered any way oat of it. There is. in truth, ns far as we can see, but one way out of it. and that is for the Chicago Convention to nominate all these gentlemen. Here, alas, they become ter > rible, fateful. erwhelming. Ko fact of nature Is mo. riant with awful mean¬ ing than the * of the Inheritance of disease. It mt physician on his daily rounds, paralyf rue ids art and filling him with dismay. The legend of the ancient Greeks pictures the Furies os pursuing families from generation to generation, rendering them desolate. The Furies still ply their woyk of terror and death, hut they are not now clothed in the garb of superstl tlon, bat appear In the more Intelligible but no less awful form of hereditary disease. Modern science, which has Illuminated so many dark corners of nature, has shod a new light on the omlnoua words of the Scriptures, -‘The sins of the fathers shall !*> t 1st ted upon the children unto the third and fourth generation." Instances of hereditary disease abound. Fifty per cent, of cases of consumption, that fearful destroyer of fami¬ lies, of cancer and scrofula, run in families through Inheritance. Insanity is hereditary in a markod degree, but, fortunately, like many other hereditary disease, tends to wear Itself out, the stock becoming extinct. A distinguished scientist truly says: " Ko organ or texture of the l>ody is exempt from the chance of being the subject of hereditary disease." Probably more chronic diseases, which permanently modify the structure and functions of the body, are more or less liable to be Inherited. The important and far reaching practical deductions from such facts-affecting so powerfully the happiness of Individuals and families and the collective welfare of the nation—are obvious to reflec¬ ting minds, and the best means for prevent¬ ing or curing these diseases Is a subjeet of Intense interest to all. Fortunately nature has provided a remedy, which experience has attested as Infallible, and the remedy is the world famous Swift's Specific, a pure vegetable compound—nature's antidote for all blood poisons.
