At pres ent it seems that the State at large will be represented in the St. Louis Convention by Hoke Smith. Pope Barrow, F. H. Richardson and F. G. DuBignon, California is going to be thorough ly advertised this year. The Legis lature placed at the disposal of each county $1,000 to be used in 1888 for advextiaiog itself. There are thirty eight counties iu California, and without a question the $38,000 sp preprinted will prove a paying in vestment. California is a progrea sive State, and Georgia might get an idea or two from her. jiarried folks in London are not supremely tappy' It is estimated that there 2,428 wives who have left their husbands-, 2,371 husbands who have left their wives; 4,750 divorced persons; 191,023 couples that live together in a state of incessant bos tilities; 510,512 couples that are ab solntely indifferent one to another, 1,050 couples that are apparently happy, 1,102 couples that are hap py to a certain extent, and of conples that are really happy, 0. Gen. Joseph E. Johnston explains how he came to make application for contributing membership in the Grand Army of the Republic. Some one sent him a circular setting forth the purpose of Baker Post to in crease its list of contributing mem bers in order that it might extend its benevolent work. Accompanying the circular was a blank form of np plication for membership. General Johnston filled out the blank, enclos ed $10, the first year's contribution, and registered the letter to Baker Post. He was moved to this action by the aid rendered by Union veter ans iu establishing the Confederate Home in Richmond. The New York Herald dishes up cold comfort for the protectionists after this fashion: “Mr. Kelley, Eas tern Republican, is for repealing the internal taxes and increasing the tar iff on several articles. ‘‘Mr. Browne. Western Republi can. ts for free lumber, free salt, free copper ore and free sugar, and don't want to tonch the' internal revenue. “The Republican leaders are split straight down the back, like a dress ed mackerel, on this tariff business. They evaded it and broko platform promises oa it as loug as they could; but the President's message brought them face to face with it at last, and they don't like the looks of it at all.-’ m-. .... ■ • « ♦ .. .» An Imperative Necessity. A3 i'SJcar cwtrifttses, Tt» LmmvxQ* Coumr Journal de depart* from its usual felicity of n pr—inn wh«a iu » head line it speak* oi “Mr. Ingalls. lb* Jack F»1 staff of Lb* Kansas Militia. * It i* true that the military record of the wdonV' ble senator from Kansas is very similar to that of the burly gee tie man of fortune who was such * great favorite of Sbakeapeare. The one point of resemblance is large, but tbe points of AiaaiccuLontj axe many. Jack Fa!staff had well known good qualities, of their kind, and does not deserve to be placed on a level with Jack Ingalls, whose good qualities, if be have any—and he must have some—have Been so effectually con cealcd from the public eye- In person, ss well as disposition, the two are totally different: Sir John being fat and apoplectic, while John Jim is lean and dyspeptic— lean as tbe hungry Cassius which be seeks to be toward Csesar Cleveland* and whom he much more resembles than be does counterfeit our friend Falstaff. The ancient Jack waa a lover, and a right good, big lover; He loved sack, and women, and good company—and more sack. The modern Jack loves nothing bnt tbe sound of Lis own voice, and prob ably even cynically despises himself as he bears its grating sounds; be is a misanthrope who can not even feign the good fellowship which Sir John so freely showed. Gouty, rheumatic and wheezing with corpo rosity and old age and tbe well known pains which afflict tbe man whose coppers are burned out, but who still clings with fond embrace to his daily and hourly toddy, Fal Btaff believed in the world and the flesh to tbe last and was, except in tbe first throes of any sudden disap pointment, always an optimist; but Ingalls believes in nothing but the devil, and views tbe world throagh the blue spectacles of pessimism. It is true that the doughty friend of Prince.Hal would run quite as will ingly from twenty men in buckram as the valiant guardian of Kansas hen roosts from one man in Confeder ate grey; but being fatter, he could not run as well. But Shakespeare makes no record of bia hero digging up dead men's bones in order that he might shake his fist at them and blackguard their tongue'ess skulls. No, no! Sir John Falstaff, gentleman and man of at least a certain code o' honor, was not built that way. With all his capacity for sack, bis spleen did not become so enlarged, and be bad no capacity for that. Wo believe that onr contemporary has not intended to cast such a slur upon a distinguished and genial historical character, but we still must protest that he be not compared to such a monument of modern infamy ns the senator from Kansas. Speaking of tbe United States sen ate, the New Orleans State pays that body this glowing tribute: “The United States senate is drifting rap iply into an arena for blackguardism. During tbe fiftieth congress it has done nothing in tbe way of useful legislation, and ids present attitude holds out no brighter promise for the future than has adorned the past. Its chief function is lo give amusement lo, anil evoke the p!au dits of, swarms of idle spectators who congregate io its galleries, by displays of vituperative personality that would outshine the coarsest mouthings of a Billingsgate fishwife. And in these ruffianly exhibitions that are made to the gallery, the memory of the dead and the good name of the living are but incidents of the most trifling account. What are facts of history, hero’s memory, or good men’s honor, wbeu a dirly mouthed ruffian is movod by the sole overmastering impulse to be smirch and blacken an opponent's reputation? Neither the truth of history, nor aught that Li sacred tbe living or the dead, has a when the oestrum of black 1 his the floor." «BrCHr.i»ATBA.»» luU k, complete cure of Catarrh of the {ladder, all annoying Kulnev, Bladder and ri nary Diseases, f 1. I lion, but appear in tbe more Intelligible but » no lea* awful form of hereditary disease. ' Modern science, which has illuminated so many dark corners of nature, has shed a new light on the ominous word* of the Scriptures, “The sins of the fathers shall be visited upon the children unto the third and fourth generation." Instances of hereditary disease abound. Fifty per cent, of cases of consumption, that fearful destroyer of fami¬ lies, of cancer and scrofula, run In families through Inheritance. Insanity is hereditary In a marked degree, but, fortunately, like many other hereditary diseasea, tends to wear Itself out, tbe stock becoming extinct. A distinguished scientist truly says: "So organ or texture of the body Is exempt from the chance of being the subject of hereditary disease.” Probafty more chronic diseases, which permanently modify the structure and functions of the body, are more or let* liable to be inherited. The important and far-reaching practical deduction* from such facts—affecting so powerfully the happiness of individuals and families and the collective welfare of the nation—are obvious to reflec¬ ting minds, and the best means for prevent¬ ing or curing these disease* Is a subject of Intense Interest to all. Fortunately nature ha* provided a remedy, which experience ha* attested as Infallible, and the remedy Is the world famous Swift's Specific, a pure vegetable compound—nature's antidote for all blood :>olsons.
