It lias recently been discovered by a board of naval experts at the United States navy yard, Mam’a Island, Cal., that the cause of the sudden deterioration in the steel used in building the ucw cruisers for the government is not due to thn ravages of a worm, os was supposed, but is caused by the fungus peronosporua infestens. so well known as the cause of potato rot . With the delicate apparatus procured by the government for testing the quali¬ ties and detecting fraud in 'Totals in¬ tended for government uses, it haa l>een ascertained that the minute spons or suds, which float in the air, are introduced into the metallic body while in the molten state during the process of carbonization. They also lind that this form of steel rot is alarmingly epidemic in much of the government material. A large and profitable field is open to inventors and scientific men who will do- vise means to arrest the spores of this fungus as they are drawn into tho car¬ bonizing furnaces, or who can prevent their growth and spread either in the ingot or manufactured forms of steel.— Detroit Free Press. Wild Silkworm, or India. For a number of years the deficiency in the production of mulberry silk haa drawn the attention of 6ericulturists to the rearing of the wild silkworms of India, China, Japan, America and other parts, and a great many reports have been published on these wild silkworms, some of which are already bred in a state of domesticity or semi-domesticity. Many of these wild silkworms produce sAk of great strength and beauty, and could all be profitably utilized if bred in their native lands on a large scale. Speci¬ men tycoons and carded and reeled silks of about twenty different species have been sent to the Societe d’Acclimatation, and they will be exhibited in the Paris International exhibition of 18^9, together with the specimens of the moths and prepared lame of the various species.—. A Colicky Cherub Lets Fall a Fatal Tear. Mb. Editor—M r. Hammond’s well told cucumber story reminds me of one I once read, about the origin of the cucumber, which I will relate as best I can. It seems one bight that one of the little cherubs after gazing for some time at the new moon, thought what a fine thing it would be to use it for a cradie. It spread its little wings and was soon rollicking and tumbling about in the jollicst manner in its improvised bed. Hut alas ! i - j >y was soon changed to sorrow . 1. my have been that it turned a lilt’ cooler. There are twenty ; oa reasons. Who shall say what p,:vcs our own little cherubs the colic? True it was that in the midst of its wildest careenings it flopped over oa its cherubic stomach and set up such a howl as to add a discordant sound to the “music of the spheres.” After various contortions of the body it doubled itself up like an animated \ ife and gazed sorrowfully over mu edge of the moon. One little stray tear drop fell down—down—till it reached a damp, slimy, and miasmatic spot on the earth. Two little leaves sprang up where it fell, then a luxurient vine grew that absorbed all the vlleuess from the gro Then it blossomed and gave bi to the eucumber, which is still it., of reminisencas of a colicky cherub’s tear. Wm. II. Lyon. Stewart on Mr, Mills’ Bill. The first speech on the Mills bill by a Georgian was made Wedncs day night by Judge Stewart. His speech is spoken ol in terms of com¬ pliment by the few who were at the night session; but as it did not ap pear in the Record yesterday morn ing I have rot been able to form an opinion on it. Griffin the Judge’s home, is a center of skilled labor; doubtless the judge is familiar with the needs of manufacture. lie surely has visited the great cotton mill at Griffin, aud certainly lias familiarized himself with the necessities (as relat¬ ing to tariffjof the Griffin ice factory. Judge Stewart is a man much given to detail. He tries to go to the very bottom of every question; and there are those who believe that he succeeded in doing that very thing in bis speech on Wednesday night, — [Macon Suuday Times. “The Proper Study of Mankind is Man,’ says the illustrious Pope. If lie had included woman in the list, he would have been nearer the truth, if not so poetical. Dr. It. V. Ice delivered to any Our Offlce Cat, “the COUNTESS.” To Yneet the exigencies of this year’s campaign, the News was on Monday presented by a kind friend with a cal. It is very small as yet, hut will probably grow larger, though it can not grow any uglier, as will be seen by tlio above accurate por trait, photographed by Milton Mitch ell and engraved in this office with a corkscrew and a file. It is a brindle gray, with stripes of some worse col or. The News being the official paper of State, county and city, “The Countess” is so far fed upon “pap,” though she already shows a fondness for manuscript with a slight prefer ence for tariff editorials. As soon as “The Countess” becomes sufficiently strong, she will be fed entirely upon political communications signed “Vox Populi,” “Many Friends” and “Voters.” This refers entirely to un paid communications. After trying editorial fare for a day and finding it too thin and poor for her delicate appotite, “The Coun tess’- has secured quarters at the recherche and darkly colored board ing house of Mrs. Cherry Jackson, where she will remain until she gets tough enough to live on tliG free soup and promises by which the ed itor manages to maintain existence. While wo protest that it was not necessary for her to get her back up so high about tho mattsr, we hope to be abio to do hotter by her later on In the meantime our muse will not bo disturbed by the ruc-ws of the cat.
