THE POLICY OF THE NEWS CAR¬
RIED OUT AT ATLANTA.
None But Tariff Reformers Sent to
St Louis—Senator Brown's
Name is Hissed.
Special to the News.'
Atlanta, May 9.—Promptly at
noon the convention of the great
Democratic party was called to order
by Judge Bingham, chairman of the
state executive committee, who was
subsequently made temporary chair
man. Hoke Smith was elected per
manent chairman. He made a strong
and ringing speech, from which the
following is an extract; “But,
gentlemen, I not only congratulate
you upon the principles which will
be emblazoned on the banner which
you will follow to victory, but I con
gratnlate you upon your standard
bearer. For many years Democrats
have honored Jefferson, the profound
statesman, they have honored Jack
son, with his iron uerve, acd it
has been frequently the caso where
you wished to compliment a friend
who was a wise Democrat, you
might call him a Jeffersonian Demo
crat, or if he manifest Demo
cratic nerve, you might call
him a Jacksonian Democrat,
But, my countrymen, a higher stand
ard ot Democracy will be known in
the future, and when you wish to
show honor to a person or think that
he is a profound statesman, a Jeffer
sonian and iron ribbed Democratic
Jacksonian, you will call him, not a
Jacksonian or Jeffersonian democrat
-you will simply call him a Cleve
land Democrat.” This was received
with great applause. No higher
tribute to this strong expression can
be paid than that it became the key
note of the convention. This senti
ment was even incorporated in the
platform of principles as reported by
the committee. At this late hour I
will not send a copy of the platform,
but it is a good one.
The following delegates to the St.
Louis convention from the State at
large were elected: Pope Barrow,
of Clarke; F. G. DuBignon,ol Chat
ham; Washington Deesau, of Bibb;
A. IT. Cox, of Fulton. Hon. Patrick
Walsh received a most flattering
vote, as a tribute, no doubt, to his
great personal worth, for the conven
tion was not in sympathy with his
views, as was evidenced by the fact
that the platform adopted was car
ried without a dissenting voice.
In a speech by one of the men
bers, a complimentory allusion was
made incidentally to Senator Brown,
which was received by hisses all
over lb ; house.
Mr. Jtck Spalding, of •Ulanta.and
Emmett Womack, our own inimita
ble Emmett, were sent as delegates
from the 5th Congressional District
to the St. Louis convention.
The spirit of the convention waB
•trongly and enthusiastically for
Cleveland, and the temper of the dele
gates was exactly in accordance
with the ideas of the News and its
readers on-the subject of tariff re
form. It is hardly conceivable that
ont of such a large body of intelligent
men there should have been each
unanimity in support of the Presi
dent‘9 policy. H.

Horticultural Society.
There was a full attendance at the reg
ulofr meeting of the Horticultural Socio
ty, at Vineyard, Tuesday evening, and
reports of committees on packages and
modes of shipments were mode.
Mr. Wayman made a .statement ex
plaining the origin of tho “Shippets
Union”—that it was a business arrange
ment entered into by the principle fruit
growers to rnako full car shipments and
thus to save freight, and in order not to
have the time of the Society takeu up
with business matters.
Crop prospects as reported show gen
eral failure of peach crop. Grapes
good; apples fair; strawberries suffered
from drouth.
Mr. Hosted reported discovering some
indications of black rot on leaf stems
and parnicle of Empire State. Some
difference of opinion was expressed as
to tho advisability of cultivating vino
yards during summer, which had beOa
infected with rot, but tin main thing is
to get varieties that are not easily affect
ed.
A letter was read from Prof. Smith}
the U. S. department expert on the sub
ject of peacii yellows, aud from the do
scription given it appears that the so
called yellows sometimes occurring here
is uot the dangerously contagooas dis
easo so prevalent in northern peach
orchards.
The short life ot the wild goose plum
was explained to be on account of bud
ding on peach stock --, and it is tu be
hoped that Mariana grown on own roots
will b»» more satisfactory in this inspect,
A committee was appointed to txperi
ment on spraying grapes to prevent
rot, their expenses to be 1 ora by the
society. Adjourned to meet June 11th,
at Vineyard Station.
