Nothing showy more significantly
the nnbalanciog ttnd filching propen
aities and practices of ihe thieving
tariff than toe wealth ooulras a be
tween the communities especially ur
tisan and those which ar- mainly
agricultural—tin- one being iaxeiLby
the tariff, of course for the benefit of
tho other. A New England Con
gross unm said, iu a speech teceutly,
that Lia section, wnicti is the poorest
naturally in the Uni led States, has
one eighth of the nation's wealth to
a thirteenth of its popul»tioo; that it
has one eighth of all manufacturing
capital and more tbun half the sav
ings bank deposits of fbo United
States. It holds, besule, farm mort
gages on two to three thousand mil
lions of money loaned to Western
farmers: tho latter even running into
debt to such staggering amounts as
this in their constant labors to pro
vide plenty of forage for the tariff
cow, which I be East is milking so
profitably.
uhere is the vis a vie; On one
side more than half trie nation's sav
ings banks' deposits to a thiiteenth
part of its people, tariff fed, how
ever, and on the other side mortgages
and debts twice as i uge as the bond
ed indebted n-of me United
States.
iho New England Congressman,
from his privileged position, boasted
of certain wealth contrasts between
New England and the South, also an
other section muinly agricultural
and tributary. In the New England
States there is an average of $120
of savings bank deposits to every
man, woman a'n 1 child, while in the
South the proportion is u quarter of
a cent to each.
This is the way it woiks, and if all
the country weie on the same side of
the tariff thimblerig ns New England,
what a grand panacea for comruer
ciai ills would it be, to be sure! But,
unfortunately, there must be payers
as well as receivers'of the tariff boun
ties, and where ihe shoe pinches is
the fact that there a;e twenty live
payers to one receiver of the loot
among the various classes of produc
ere.
The most wonderful part of it is
yot to come. Those tribute payers
have twenty five timo as many ballots
as those who are skinning them thus
by means of laws passed by an elec
five body.—| Courier-Jout nal.
Let our Protectionist friends in
Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama,
who are stiil Democrats at heart, re
view tho record, study the situation
and revise their position. The Dem
ocratic party of tho nation is dead in
earnest about the reduction of the
war taxes and tho return of our cus
toms system to a sound revenue ba
sis. All obstacles are now out of
the way. Tho movement for reform
is thoroughly organized, and when
the long line of march is taken up, ii
will not stop until the end is reached
and victory assured. The enemy in
front is the Republican parly, no
other; aud he who is not for us is
bound, soon or lute, to be against us.
Quibbling will no l mger avail. Ob
Btrnction will not be tolerated. The
party in aud out of Congress, with
the Administration at its head, is a
unit. It is worse than foliy for a few
crotchety persons, who can not have
things their own way, to stand out,
pretending that they are Democrats,
and hoping, successfully, to carry wa
ter on both shoulders. The time has
gono by for Ibis. We ought to stand
together on our honor and fora prin
ciple, and, please God, for our coun
try.
Lift up your hearts, brethren, who
hare not faltered, and ye that have,
turn not away with darkened faces,
but came back to the fold, and there
shall still be now, as of old, rnoro
joy over o; e sinner that repenteth
than over ninety and nine that never
went astray.
The Earth Exhales Poison
To the air in localities where vegetation,
rotted by freshets, is laid hare to the sun’s
rays by tlie retiring Hood. Millions of square
acres, in the vicinity of the great tributaries
of the Mississippi and the Missouri in the
South and South-west, give forth this fever¬
laden miasmatic vapor, disseminating mala¬
rial pestilence broadcast. Not only through
ont the great West, but wherever on this con¬
tinent fever and ague makes its periodic ap¬
pearance—and what locality is wholly exempt
from it?—Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is the
recognized defense, the most highly Fever accred¬ and

| j The Democratic State conventions
J now being held indicate clearly the
trend of public thought relative to
Tariff Reform. This week’s results
may be summarized ns follows: Mary
land indorses the Administration and
declares in faver of laritf revision;
Alabama is '‘unalterably opposed to
the present war tariff. We demand j
a reform of tin* laril! and a reduction
of the surpki, in, the Treasury by a
reduction ot the tariff taxation,” and
Tennessee heartily indorses the nd
minisltation of President Cleveland
and his recent message to Congress;
Vermont’s permanent Chairman of
the Convention was loudly applaud
ed when he said: “We have but one
candidate, but he is worth all others
put together. Republicans want to
eiect the bloody shirt personified;
but we want a set of principles per
sonified in Grover Cleveland.”
