Hahi’TOX, Ox , May 14.—During the atill hours of Sabbath night a timely watchman aroused the citi zens from their quiet slainberiugB with the fire alarm. The flames were just getting under headway when a posse of pedestrians discover ed the fire to be located in M. B. Norths store. It was unquestionably accidental, snd caused by rats eating the matches, as the fire was entirely in side and fur removed from any open tng, and no traces indicated iucen diarism. The application of a dozen buckets of water extinguished the greedy flames within one hour's time, wheu all was quiet and every one returned to dreamy land. The loss to goods was estimated by Mr, North to be about f3()0. The I ouee being brick, only u few draw ers and shakes were destroyed, ami can soon be replaced. Mr. North carries a good insurance and keeps well protected. “The Proper Study of Mankind is Man,’ says the illustrious in Pope. I believe that all are willing to give up their fisbiDg for a whils and fight General Green, except A. C. Driver. His pray lts and wishes have been for a wet spell to cause the farmers to have grass in their crops so as to stop everybody from fisbiDg except himself and P. F. Bor ders, with whom he generally fishes. He is proving that he meant wbat be said, as he goes every otLer day, and the days that they are not fish ing they are making preparations for it. Corn crops look fine and I have seen sorrier prospects for a cotton crop, and I believe that if faitbfal work and economy on the part of the farmers will prove a blessing to the country, we may look forward to a prosperous future, as I have never seen the farmers work better or use more economy than at this time. W, M. Digby, formerly of your coDnly and at this time in the mer cantile business at this place, is quite a favorite with the girls here. I suppose tbat it is because he is good looking and handles candy and snuff, for I believe that the girls all love candy, and tbe most of them will take a little snnffi While speaking of the young folks I will say something of the old ones. S. S. Coggins age is just 37 and his wife‘s 35, and they are the grandfath er and grandmother of a fine boy, which places them on the list with old folks; and I expect that they are the youngest grandparents in this cennty, if not in }he State. We have some weddings or mar riages in this section, and I believe those of the young folks that are not married are trying to make their srrftDgements to marry, and I hope they will, for 1 like to hear of if. We had a'marriage last Sunday evening. Mr- A. F. Borden and a daughter of Mr. J. E. Hallman, being well ac qaainted with the style in this conn try, took a ranning 6tarl and could not stop until they reached tho resi dence of W, J. Coggins, Esq , and while under tho excitement of tbe race were married—through a mis take, I think, as I have long been acquainted with Mr. Borders and never knew of his visiting any lady. But as this mistake has occured,! join Others in wishing them a happy fu ture and that their future mistakes will prove as pleasant to them as this seems to be. Reeks.
