To secure a substantia! cc.ortu jury took tbe offi¬ cer some hours, but he succeeded fi¬ nally in getting together a half doz¬ en ebon-hued gentlemen, satisfactory alike to the County Attorney and the defendant. They were a lot of houest-Iooking oid dar¬ kies, each c f whom looked like church d< and seemed fully wi.n .he proper dignity a juror and tbe importance rf the he was called upon for the first in bis life to perform. After duly sworn and listening to evidence, which was positive, and to the short speeches of the defend¬ and the County Attorney, and been instructed by the court the punishment for tbe defend¬ offense, if they should believe him guilty beyond the influence of a doubt, was a fine of not $20, the jury retired to consult on their verdict. They were about thirty minutes, when they returned and presented the fol¬ lowing : “We, the undersined jurey, fined the defendant $<52 and fees for the jurrey,” to which two of the jury signed their names and the other lour made their marks. When ’Squire Morgan read aloud their remarkable verdict he could not repress a broad smile, which spread all over his benevolent fea¬ tures until he was the very picture of mirthfulness ; but quickly recov¬ ering his composure, ho observed to the intelligent jury that they bad ev identiy not regarded the instructions given them relative to the limitation of punishment, and informed them that at tbe most they could fine do fendant but $20. Thereupon the most venerable old coon upon the panel arose and said : “Well, ’Squire, you airde jedge, but we is de jury, and we all Knows dis here nigger, and he am one of de worst lot in dis community. An Atlanta special to the Savan nah Newsjpays it was reported in At lanta, on Tuesday, that Fat Walab, Senator Brown and one or two other Protectionists, are contemplating uniting upon some low tariff Demo crat, who will be urged to oppose Mr. Colquitt for the Senate. They think, so the rumor goes, that it is impossible to defeat him with a Pro tectionist, but have hopes of weak ening his strength by taking up some Democrat who holds the same views on the tariff, and think strong ly that they can defeat him by this method. The friends of Senator Brown are very much chagrined at the way his name was received when mentioned in the convention on Wed nesday. He was notified by wire of tbe matter.
