A St, Louis burglar stayed so long in a bouse to eat maple syrup that he was caught. It is possible that by leaving a jar of maple syrup and two or three pies on the dining-room table, the silver might often be *»v**d. The burning of the steel works and rolling mill of the great Thila delpbia saw works was no doubt brought on by a spark from the Mills Bill. Ail failures and fires necessari ly spring from attempts to reduce our exceedingly high tariff, The St. Lon is Globe Democrat (Kep.): “There are pathetic indi cations to the effect that the Harrison boom appears to have been turned back bv the high water on the East¬ ern border of Iowa. As for ShertnaD, it would be money in his pocket if he could have a mind reader to tell him what the Ohio delegation is thinking." *—■■ ■ .—i ---- --------- --- Messrs. Allison, Aldrich, lliscockj Beck and Harris, of the Senate Com mittec on Finance, have been ap pointed by the Chairman of that com raittee as the aub-committee to make inquiries and take testimony on ques tions of tariff and revenue. This • is the beginning of the Republican plan in tbe Senate to delay and con fuse tbe issue of tariff reform, should it be forced on that body by the pas¬ sage of the Mills Bill in the House. The Columbus Enquirer-Sun ob serves that “tbe only signs of as¬ sistant republicanism now visible in tieorgia are the silly attacks on Sena tor Colquitt lor not belonging, body and soul, to lion. Patrick Walsh. It is said that Mr. Walsh once helped to elect him Governor, and it is assumed from this fact without argument, that he ought to forget the interests of the one hundred and thirty thousand people who voted for him, and remember only Mr. Walsh. It is but justice to Mr. Walsh, how ever, to say that these pieces do not emanate from his pen, but are writ¬ ten by anonymous scribblers repre¬ senting nobody, and accomplishing nothing.” It is surprising that Mormomsm ihould get a footing in as intelligent a community as Augusts, in this Stite, but it appears to be a fact nev ertheless. A dispatch from that city to tbe Atlanta Constitution, says: “A petition, complaining of the pres ence of Mormons, in the city, was circulated here yesterday. The Lat ter Day Saints have made great strides and are seriously thinking of erecting a Mormon chapel here. Last Sunday five members of one i church were expelled from tho body for having embraced the doctrines of Brigham Young. Their followers now number 200. Services are held publicly every Sunday on Calhoun street in a house of one of the faith. A seasation has been created by a report that one of the olders went to the father of a family which had j embraced Mormonism, and told him that he had a vision from the Lord, instructing him to hold such relations with the unmarried daughters as are not sanctioned by the laws of moral } ity-’’ _______ I is a Curious Fat* That the body is now more susceptible to benefit from medicine than at nav other sea¬ son. Do the friends and sup of the war tariff think that end the contrTersj? If they do must be adepts in self deception. agitation of which the Mills BJ1 the outcome has been gaining year by year since ite in surplus showed that there financial dangers as well as op in the continuance of the tariff, There is not tbe slightest to believe that it will be quiet by tbeiailure of tie Mills Bill the contrary, it is as certain as in the future can be that failure of that measure will only and intensify the agitation tariff’ reform. The Dext measure forward will be even more tban the Mills Bill. It will shorn of some of tbe compromis which have been incorporated in latter upon the grounds of expe and as by that time the sur will Dave become even a greater than now, the more radical will pass. The sap of tbe war tariff are only in a more complete destruction their idol by their opposition to Mills Bill " Philadelphia Record: '‘In their State conventions held thus the Republicans have instructed delegates to vote for the follow Presidential candidates: Onio, Iowa, Allison; Indiana, and Gresham; Illinois, Wisconsin, Rusk; Michi Alger; New Jersey, Phelps. New York Republ'can couven will probably add the name of M. Depew to this list of la-orites. But over hangs the shadow of Blaine, li New York Republicans should their delegates for Depew, woud be used only as a ccnven cover for the man from Maine, as William Waltei Phelps is in New Jersey. While tbe of Alger and Rusk are en without success to extend booms beyond the State limits, only serious rivals of Blaine are Allison and Gresham; and one of these the opposition to Blaine movement will doubtless concentrated- Tbe efforts of the have been mainly directed prevent any concentration, in the that irreconciable differences make the nomination of their a necessity.” There is a deal of significance in condition of things: “The South Carolina Republican convention was composed cf members—115 colored and 10 This is, we believe, the larg negro predominance in aDy party ever witnessed in this Still it fairly represents proportion of tho two colors in Republican party of the State. years ago there were enough Republicans in South Carolina hold the best offices and manipn tbe canvasses and conventions; when Mr. Hoyts withdrew the tho great body cf carpet-bag took their flight, and now ne make up the bulk of the party,” Mrs. Katie L.
