Whj Delegate Voeriiees Will Not Speak On the Mills BUI. Washington, Maj 17.— Delegate Charlie Vaorhees, of Washington Territory, was asked to day by your correspondent if he intended to raaka a speech on the tariff during the de bate which is now on. “Not much,” was the reply. “I am too smart for that. On the tariff I am smarter than a Philadelphia lawyer. Washington Territory is a very big tract of land. In tbe east and west all of the voters are tariff reformers. In the north and south they are protectionists, J want to be a member of the next House.” “That reminds me,” said Repre sentative Mason, of Illinois, who was present, “of an old and very practical politician in my State. His ■ame is Elijah J. Haynes. He has requentty been a member of the State Legislature. During one of his campaigns he had a good deal of Opposition. He worked the churches. He took a pew in a Catholic church, made a generous contribution to the Episcopal church, and, in short, neglected no denomination. When this became knowu some of the church members spoke to him about it. It was not entirely satisfactory to them. They told him that he was reported to be a Universalist and many other things. They wanted to know what he really thought as to tbe hereafter. Haynes protested against this. He said: ‘You ought not to spring tbe question of heaven and hell on me right in the m>dst of a hot campaign! You see T hate friends in both places.” ’ A Demoniacal Plot. We have formed a plot to so eternally demoraliza the dele gates that they‘11 forget what they came there for, and most likely begin wandering about in amazement until they are picked up and taken to lun atic asylums for treatment. My stare! What—what reason-de¬ throning drugs you got hold of? Dont neod any drugs.
