Wbat shall we do about the fennel and weeds that are usurping the sidewalks? Cutting them down iB the best thing. On BOtue of our walks this fennel is get ting to be a considerable nuisance, especially to the ladies, to protect whose attire, requires a broader walk than a pig trail through fennel and weeds that are eighteen inches is height. Our muchiloved I3ermudah grass, immediately after a rain, or wbeD the morning dew is on, is not an a greeable or pleasant carpet for the sidewalks of the city, and the fennel and weeds are worse. Wo trust the street committee will call the street brigade into service and lot them have a battle with the fennel and weeds that are monopolizing some sidewalks in the city. Strawberries are plentiful aud are getting to be cheap. W. W. Walcott has returned from a business trip to Atlanta. Locals were scarce yesterday and we just couldn’t make ’em. ’Rah for Jake Engel !—he wouldn’t have it said Griffin didn’t get nothing. “Have you heard from Americas was asked several times yesterday after noon. Mrs. M. It, Brown, our popular mil liner, spent yesterday in the Gate City on business. The paint brush is being applied pret ty freely on Poplar street—a fact wo are glad to note. Griffin is proud of her fire depart meat and has every reason to be, if they did get beat. Miss Minnie Saffold, a most charming young lady of Senoia, is in the city the gueBt of MrB. Grit tendon. Our doctora are complaining of a dull trade—which speaks well for the health of our town and county. It seems that the cotton crop has not all been sold—five bales of the fleecy staple came in yesterday. Prayer meeting at the Methodist chnrch last night was well attended and was unusually interesting. Foot peddlers are becoming numcr ous—two passed through our city yes terday. They did not stop, however. Walter H. Worthington, of Dalton, passenger conductor on the East Ten n^ssee road, is visiting his father, Geo. H. Worthington. The sun came out yesterday afternoon and our farmers will doubtless enter their fields today with renewed energy and vigor. George Brooks, an old Griffin boy, now in the employ of the Southern Ex press Co., Atlanta, is spending a week with his parents here. Chickens and eggs are a scarcity. We saw a Griftinito down on Hill street yes tmlay “waiting for the wagons'’ con taiuing such produce to come in. H. W. Uasselkus, T. J. Brooks aud G. a. Cunningham, who have been as sessing the city property for some days since, will finish their labors today. It seems that all the fruit is not kill •d. Art Goolsby brought a largo clear seed peach to town yesterday aud says he will ship thirty or forty crates next week. Americus, Ga., May 23.—The weather to day has lct.u the best in the world for the tournament and a large crowd assembled to witness the occasion. Tbe sun has not shone much but there has been no rain. The track is the finest I ever saw for the purpose. Everything passed off very pleasantly and Griffin carries off a prize as usual. Jake Engle wou 20 dollars easily in the foot race. .The following i3 the score of the five companies in the order run: Wide-Awakes,of Americus. toping 12J, first test 22 1-5, second test 18 55-100. Americus thus keeps all the money except twenty-five dollars that goes to Dawson and the twenty dollars that Griffin’s best man won. G. THREE PRETTY GIRLS. The Fine Walk or One of the Trio Pro¬ voked a Compliment. Three very pretty girls strolled past two gentlemen yesterday after noon and turned into Mangham’s to get a drink of soda. -The fine walk of one of the three provoked a com pliment from one of the gentlemen wirh the remark ; “That young woman is an excep tion—she has learned how to walk.’’ Not quite, replied the other. She is correct in walking from the bip down and it is that which yon have noted as giving her walk an excep tional grace, but she still moves the shoulders too much. The shoulders Bhould take no part in the walk at all; They should be thrown easily back and held, not rigid, but quiet, find the gait at which that trio is walk ing is to slow. There should be a steady even movement forward, and that cannot be attained at that gait. We give the above as as a pointer to young ladies who wish to walk well and gracefully. fUU W EIGHT Its superior excellence proven In millions of homes for more than a quarter of a cen tury. It always gets left, and it is a cold day when it gets left. The colored base ball club of Griffin will play against Macon Friday and Bat urday. The Central authorities have given them the benefit of reduced rates and a large crowd will doubtless attend. F as and wife, nee Miss Florenc> Stall v, of Savannah, passed through Griffin yesterday en route to Columbus, their future home. Mrs. Bims once resided in Griffin, end was quite a favorite in our society circles. G av ® up al * hope and breathed his ! ?f. We regret t~ i-nounce the serious ill ness of R. F. M. Mean, one of Griffin’s oldest citizens. He fit v been Bick for two or three weeks past, but was thought to be improving until Tuesday when he grew worse. At this writing he is very low and may not live through the night, but we sincerely hope the worst may not come yet. On Sunday night last some miscreant threw a rock into the window of Mrs. M. L. White’s mil'inery establishment at the Clark comer. This is getting to be quite an often occurrence, and if a guilty party could once be arrested and punished to the extent of the law, we are inclined to be’ievc such mischief would decline. It has been conceded by the housewives of Griflin that the “President’s Wife” is the best flour for all purposes ever sold in Grif¬ fin. jt contains no injurious adulterations, but is a pare wholesome goods. (2) strength, economy, and News From Akin , Akins, Dist,, May 23.—Now we have had a plenty of rain for the present, enough to satisfy all the grumblers, though our depraved nature is hard to satisfy. I notice some men in dry weather they seem to bo perfectly reckless, they can’t speak a good word to the old woman, and as for the servants they must, keep out of the way, then on the other hand, when it rains too much to suit them they are equally as bad if not worse, such is the depravity of our nature, and some seem to be worse than others. We should not be that way, but should be resigned to all providential dealings towards us, knowing that He that controls the rains and storms, also holds the issues of Life and Death. Amen to it. There is some sickness in this seo tion. not fatal as yet. We now have good stands of cot¬ ton. The first chopping will have to be chopped over, as the seed had not ail come up. Gorn is small and hard on account of the dry weather bnt it will come out of that now with proper work. Mr. W. S. Wise has a pair of the finest colts in this county, of his own raising, 3 or 4 years old. Mr. Wise is a model man and his ex ample should be followed by every farmer il possible. Elder J. C. Nichols, of Zebulon, spent Saturday night with Elder J. E. Duke and Sunday night with Elder W. Z. Gardner and family, the Judge is always a welcome visitor with these good people. Miss Sallie Gardner is said to be the best marksman, for a lady, in the Dist., as she shot and killed a hawk a few days since. Mr. Gardner has a patch of cotton that beats anybody’s, it had squares a week ago, He is not competing with anybody eitbe - . He planted his seed in the old syle, except us ing guano. More anon.
