Whatever bo tho result of tlio investi¬ gations of this case, there will always ro- main a suspicion of foul play; at least, an attempt to draw Mr. Hatch into some transaction which would involve his fam¬ ily in disgrace. A detective has testified that ho was employed Scofield to follow Mr. Hatch and Mrs. to her house, and that ho saw Hatch dodging as if ho suspected he was followed. Ferris, the hrother-in-law, was the man who engaged the detective to do this work, and it is not hard to surmise that ho did so -with tho knowledge of and in collusion with Mrs. Scofield*. This theory is quito consistent with the action of tho woman in calling a policeman to break down the door of the room in which Hatch had taken refuge for tho time being. It would bo quito natural for tlie most innocent of men to fly at the attempted breaking barricade in of a door which wa3 the only between liimself and disgraco. And what would be a more natural action on the part of Mrs. Scofield, if sho wished HATCH. MRS. SCOFIELD. FERRIS. SCOFIELD, to secure a witness to tho fact that Mr. Hatch was in her room, than to call in a minion of the law to seo for himself, al¬ though she might cunningly givo another reason to the policeman? Jn tlio Wikis of lirazil. Dr. Ivarl von dcr Steincn has returned to Germany from a second journey of ex¬ ploration to tho basin of tho Xingu, the great Amazon tributary. Tho two ex¬ peditious, tho first of which was made in 1884, have opened up a region which has been hitherto a terra incognita. Dr. Von den Steinen’s explorations and rich col¬ lections will especially interest anthropol¬ ogists and ethnologists. In these almost inaccessiblo Brazilian wilds ho lias found Indian tribes whoso civilization lias not yet reached tlie stage of the use of metals, their weapons and implements being made of stones, bones and tho teeth of fishes.
