Two gent lemon in passing the city hall yesterday, one was heard to remark: “Why don’t the city authorities renovate this building, carpet it nicely and make it wtiat it should be—a credit to Grif fin ?” Griffin, like all large, live towns, has more than an abundance of young hood lurns, who are in a fair way to become confirmed criminals beforo they arrive at their majority. The Tax Receiver paid his respects to Hampton for the last time this year(24) and we know not, it may be forever. Things change when votes are counted and don’t you forget it. The Octogenarian, Uuclc Buck Fears (as we know him) has a well dug in 1839, that stood until yester day, when it ca\ed in above the curb. He has the same old wooden rooler, and is now refiting the curb ing. The yankees can testify as to the merits of the water. Uncle Buck feeds both the inner and outer man. The recent rain3 have made glad the heart of man, and bids fair to pro duce from its effects substance for man and beast. It has certainly raved the spring oats. A. W* Crookshank had to make horses swim Flint river, Tuesday morning enroute to Woolseyville. This part of the country is solid for Cleveland for President, and Stewart for Congress —despite all opposition. Hymeneal, List night at the resitlenoa of J. (J. Me Garland, T. A. Bolton was uni ted in marriage to Miss Willie Du pree, ltev. Dr. Bradley officiating, The bride was dressed in white bro caded satiu and the groom in a hand sonao suit of black. J. H. Yiiss Willie, the fair bride, is t^e daughter of F. G. Dupree, living neir Mt. Zion. She is one of Spald ing county’s fairest daughters and the groom is to be congratulated upon securing the heart and hand of such an estimablo young lady as a helpmeet through life. The happy couple start out under the most favorable circumstances, and The News joins their many friends in wishing them a long and happy life. Gritty Grover. Washington, May 21.— The presi dent on Saturday vetoed eight spe cial pension bills. Seven of them are vetoed upon the grouod principally of a lack of merit, or failure to eslab lisli sufficient grouod for the claim, but of the eighth the president, after a caustic review of the evidence pre seated in support of tho application save I believe tb s claim for a pen sion to be a fraud from beginning to end, and the effrontery with which it has been pushed shows the necessity of a careful examination of these cases. I Orchard BUI Note*. Orchard Hill,Ga., May 24.—We have beer, blessed with a roost gra¬ cious season. A gentle rain fell all day Sunday and continued on through the night until the land was thorough ly saturated and vegetation begins to have a more life like appearance. Eveiybody is in high spirits and pre paring to go with a rush as the ground is sufficiently dry lo work. Col. J. D. Cunningham is having the old store formerly occupied by Grubbs & Cony moved from the lot on which it stands in order to build a new public ginnery and corn mill. This will add greatly to the looks as well as the prosperity of our town. W. W. Grubbs returned home on Monday from a visit to Southwest Georgia. Miss Mittie Thompson returned home at Milner, on Monday, after spending several days at the Hill. The farmers will organize an Alii ance club at place on Saturday next. This may be a good thing and a ben efit to the farmer, but it started a long ways from home. Let them look twice and step once. If a farmer has a good credit, pays his debts and with but little cash he can buy goods very near at manufacturer’s prices without any one to endorse for him. J. J. Camp who bas been with the C. R. R. for some time past, bas re turned to his farm. He says there is nothing like the farm. The little girls of our town can be seen most every afternoon out horse back riding. This seems to be a source of much enjoyment to the lit tie ladies. We hope to give the News the best crop report that we have had for years in few weeks and it won’t be a butchers or cucumber tale either, Ju»ge. AT HOME. Stonewall No. 2 and Griffin No. 1 Re¬ turns. A majority of our gallant fire boys arrived home safely yesterday on the up passenger due here at 11:31, in the best of spirits, notwithstanding their &:feat at Atnericus. Our fir* men rarely get left on such occasions, and the company that “downs” them in a foot race certainly deserves cred it. They are loud in their praise of the hospitality of the Americus de partment—nothing was left undone to add to the enjoyment and pleasure of all companies present, for which they have the universal thanks of the Griffin Fire Department. Long may they live. You- W EIQHr Its superior for excellence proven in millions of koines more than a quarter of a een tury. It iaused by the United States Gov¬ ernment.
