With Blaine out of the race, T*ho

The Republicans are very much
agitated through fear that Mr. Inure
man will run for the V see Presi¬
dency.
The President baa vetoed the bill
appropriating 1100,000 for a public
building in Columbus, on the ground
that the amount is too large for the
size of the city.
The Democrats of Illinois are san
guine in the hope of carrying tbeir
State for Cleveland and tariff reform
in November. They have a strong
candidate for governor^in their nomi
nee, ex-Governor Palmer, and tariff
Inform is popular in Illinois.
Judge E. D. White, who has been
chosen as the successor of Senator
Eustis, of Loosiana, is a gentleman
in every way worthy the high honor
conferred upon him. He baa been
• leader of the Democratic party in
Louisiana for years past, and will be
among the distinguished figures in
the Senate.
If Judge Thurman will stand for
the Vice Presidency, other candi
dates may as well stand back. What
a contrast tbsre would be between
him and the President of the Senate!
The narrow, venomous versatility of
Ingalls would make a fine beck
ground for Thurman’s honest, intre
pid soundness and solidity.
The death of Gen. Sheridan would
lsav# Gen- M, Schofield in chief com
toftnd of the army, as the ranking
major-general. The office of general
no longer exists. Gen. Sherman was
the !»3t to enjoy it. Sheridan is a
lieutenant general. After his death

The Negro World, of Knoxville,
Tenn., edited and published by col¬
ored men, makes a statement which
ought to put to shame the asper
nous on the South made by Northern
politicians. It says: “There is no
place North or South that life or pro
petty is more secure than hast
Tennessee. Nor is this spirit of
justice and equality before the law
confined to party or color, but to the
whole people who go to make up the
commonwealth of East Tennessee.”
A Fall River cotton factory recent
ly increased its capital from $600,000
to $900,000. In 1879 the capital
was $250,000, and this had been
raised successfully to $500,000 and
$750,000, It had paid bacn $150,
000 to stockholders, in addition to
earnings since 1879 of $480,000.
The added capital of 300,000 will be
applied to building a new factory of
40,000 spindles: This sort of inci
dent is a pointer to the philosophy
of the fact that New England has
sixty odd per ceut. of tbe savings
bank deposits of the United States.

ocratic National Convention will meet
in Si Louis. The occasion will be a
grand Cleveland ratification and a
royal Democratic jubilee. There
will bo no doubt of the candidate and
none about the platform; It will be
a square, clean cot, out and oaf. tariff
reform document, suited for the
business interests of the country.
The only point of doubt or uncertain
ty will be the second name on tbe
ticket, and this will make tbe Conven
tion all the more interesting. Spec
illation is already rife, and the doubt
ia delicious Will it be Gray or
Blackf Will it be Thurman or tome
other noble Roman? Will it be Vilas
or Dickenson’ Will the new name
come from tbe East or tbe West?
The Georgia and Carolina dekga
tions will leave Snnday night or Mon
day morning. To our delegates and
to the National Convention we offer
our good wishes and congratnlations
on the pleasant and patriotic task
ahead of them!
Mr, Blame has written another let
ter declining to be the candidate of
the Republican party for the Presi
dency this year. It is dated May 17,
and is addressed to Mr. Whitelaw
Reid, the editor of tbe New York
Tribune. In it Mr. Blaine says point
ediy: “Assuming thatjthe Presidential
nomination could, by any possible
chance, be offered to me, I could not
accept it without leaving in the
minds of thousands of these men
(bis friends) the impression that I
had not been free from indireotion,
and, therefore, I could not accept it
at all.” This ought to clear the Chi
cago decks for action. Mr. Blaine is
a shrewd man—shrewd enough to
see that the Republican party can
not elect a Ppresident this fall—and
he does not propose to end bis politi
cal career by a second defeat. “The
acrimonious contests over men,” by
which he says Republican victory
can be “imperiled/’ will now become
more acrimonious than ever.
Ex-Gov, Foster, of Ohio, has writ
ten a letter to a friend in St. Louie,
in which he says: “Tbe doubt about
Judge Gresham’s position on tbe
tariff question, the fancy for him by
tbe mugwumps, and the alienation of
the railroad interest, it seems to me,
put Judgo Gresham out of the list of
candidates.” It is apparent that
many Republicans will make a wry
face, if they have to swallow Gres
ham. Mr. Poster says that he looks
for the nomination of Sherman at
Chicago. This is something that
some Ohio men are not looking far.
