Yesterday's rain storm was violant for
a little while, but was nothing to what
occurred in Forsyth a few days ago.
Then the rain fell in snch sheet* that it
was impossible to see the court house
from any store on the square, while
the roof of the store of Huddleston
A Zellner became three feet deep with
water, breaking in the rafters and com
palling the boring of holes in the door
below to let the water through.
The New York Store received by the
late express a line of plaid lawns which
they will sell at 10 a per yard. These
goods are finer than the big leader last
week at 15 c. Capt. Lyons tried himself
on this last visit to New York.

The walls of ‘-The (irtjti!*'tamer
which usually look down spoa
warlike feats of grim-visaged and
battle scarred veterans, “saw another
sight” upon the evening cf Tharsdsv
last, for it (the armory) was the scene
oi the Leap Year German tendered
by the young ladies vf Griffin to
“the boys.”
The muskets and bayonets bad
disappeared and the walls and man

turning s*oi. into plowshares and

The si. j si p in the front was

The effect was celestial, and the

that some of the gentlemen looked
as if they were afraid of being ac

There was quite a number of new
figures, the perfect execution of
which reflec- ■> great credit upon
the eharming , . i„r, who was ably
assisted by her energetic partner.
At 11 o’clock there was a short
intermission for refreshments, after
which the dancers began again to

Griffin is noted for the consider
ate attention of her young gentle
men, and the delightful entertain
ment they gave their lady friends
at the home of Miss Flora J^nes, last
Thursday evening, s only another
proof of their never failing conrtesy
and kindness. When first you reach
ed the scene, it appeared almost as
a glimpse from fairy-land. The
most exquisite floweis graced the
rooms, a mass of daisies and green
ferns nodded their bright welcome
over the open portal, soft lights
cast their golden radiance over
sweet roses aud jessamine, and the
fairest flowers shed their fr agrance
everywhere. Tiie hours sped by on
silvery .Vet, pursued by mirth and
laughter, and “ali went merry as a
marriage beli,”
Long before time had been given
to weary of the brilliant scene, deli
cious refreshments were served, and
dainty ices added their portion to the
enjoyment of the evening. When
the chiming of the clock warned the
merry-makers that morn was stealing
in, the last goodnights were said,
and they issued forth into tfie dark
ness with a lingering glance at the
beautil’ni home, where the hours had
passed so pleasantly.

We find a general expression of
relief from our citizens that there
was no alarm bell to ring. So long
as the council saves the expense of
an [alarm bell, it does not matter,
of course, if the whole town burns
down in a night. Economy is the
word, and safety does not matter.
