One paper states that Cleveland
I ■T was nominated by “acclimation.” He
is so well acclimated to the Potomac
fiats that bo will stay on them an
other four years.
The tariff plank of 1884, with the
President’s message as its interpre
tation, becomes the tariff plank of
1888. That is to say. the message
is the platform. Watterson himself
coaid not have written a stronger
one, or one that could better please
the tariff reformers.
We were Bomewhat disappointed
at the appeorancf tho picture of
Cleveland made in the News yester
day until the Constitution cume to
hand. Then we were supremely
content. First class pictures of both
candidates will probably be at band
in time for Sunday's News.
Mr. Murat Halstead, of Cincinnati,
says in one breath that he is a very
conservative person, and in the next
be says some very intemperate things
about the south—waves the bloody
shirt, in fact. Halstead evidently
doesn’t understand himself. Tho
country understands him, however,
and he wouldn’t feel complimented
to hear the country’s opinion of him.
The Democracy are prefectly unit
ed on men and measures this J’ear,
and stand ten times as good a
chanco of electing their ticket as
they did four years ago. The only
States where there might be the
slightest disposition to fight the
tariff reform movement, are those
which are overwhelmingly Repabli

Ify carried by tho Democrat a, In the
Republican party the reverse is true.
In the States where their majority is
I small, as in Minnesota and Michigan,
there is such a growing sentiment in
favor of a reduction of the war tariff
that they will undoubtedly cast their
electoral votes for the Democratic
candidates. Then again, the Repub
licaus are split up the back with dis
(tensions in regard to candidates,
apd their several organs have already
said more mean things about the
rival candidates, than the Democrats
could repeat from now to election.
,, The Democrats are going to sweep
I before

a manner that will mako tho Itepubli

ALLK.k G. THURMAN
As’an original Ohio Democrat of
the Valhndigham atripe and the
**Mct»back” variety, we rejoice in
the nomination of Thurman if only
for the discomfiture of the “Kids”
and tho “boodle gang” who forced
him into retirement. But it is by
no means im probable that he will
carry Ohio, as he will certainly car¬
ry the neighboring State of Indiana.
No abler and certainly no purer
statesman breathes than Thurman,
and men of all parties respect and ad
mire him. He occupies the same
warm position in the hearts of the
Democracy that the lamented Hen¬
dricks did, and is a much greater
man. Witn Cleveland and Thurman
there will be such an awakening of
Democratic enthusiasm as the coun
try has never witnessed. As his
uncle, old Bill Allen, was once
brought from a long retirement and
placed at the head of the party in
Ohio, leading them on to the first
victory in many a long year, so will
the old Roman gather up the strings
of affection of the voters whom life

will then be redeemed from the
odious reputation given her by parti
san Republicans and unworthy Dem
ocrats.
Jefferson Davis, who was 80 years
old last Sunday, has lived to see
nearly all of those who were the most
prominent in the great civil strife, in
which he played so conspicuous a
paat, pass away. He was a distin
guished man in public life when Abra
-ham Lincoln was an unknown coun¬
try lawyer, and yet Lincoln has been
dead close on to a quarter of a cen¬
tury.
The nomination of Thurman will
call out every mossback in the land;
and there are lots of them in the
woods yet.
