CAGED AT LAST.
GREEN GRIFFITH CAPTURED AT
IURNESVILLE.
The- Beues of His Unknown Victim
Found iu a Swamp a Mouth After
the Murder Was ( omitted.
Barneiville, Jane 11.—About six
months ago Green Griffith, colored,
murdered a man, vvbose name and
colored was unknown, near the resid
ence of Mr. J. M, Bassey, about five
miles from town. Nothing was kopvra
of the mnrder until a month after
wards, when the bones of the uafor
tunato man were found in the swamp
of Potato creek, not far from the
place numed. When this fact Was
made kuu*n Griffith fled for parts an
known and Saturday night, thinking
all suspicion upon him had been dis
missed, came back to Barnesville and
lodged in a negro cabin in the city
limits. Oar excellent sheriff, William
Howard, by some means found
out that he was in town in a certain
house, and made no delay in making
the arrest. He, together with a pds
se of citizens, sarrounded the house,
after many threats succeeded in tak
ing him. He backed himself a
corner, armed with an axe and a raz
or and defied the sheriff, but when
the muzzles of a half dozen rifles
greeted his eyes he was obliged to
give up, He is a mean looking ne
gro, and the evidence is stron against
nim. He was safely placed in the
county jail.
We had a refreshing shower today,
and everything looks better.
The eotton factory boom is still to
the front here. We aae going to
have it. Over half the capital
stock has been subscribed and it will
be a success.
Flat Shoals Facts.
Flat Shoals, June 12.—We had
two very pleasant little showers yes¬
terday that cooled the air considera¬
bly.
Willis Strickland’s little r> »y hap¬
pened to a very painful accident last
week. He was climbing and fell,
breaking his arm, and he has been
suffering a great deal from it. Mr.
Strickland has another little fellow
rising up with the mumps.
D. P. Ellis, of Oakland, arrived
home Sunday from Brunswick, Ga.,' j
and says timss are goot there.
Capt. W. H. Hartwell spent Sun¬
day in Griffin and returned yesterday
to the Shoals.
H. B. Neal went up to McDon¬
ough Sunday morning to attend
church with his best girl.
While it is in style for naming
candidates, will you allow the writer
space in your valuable paper, to
name two that would do honor to
Spalding county, and men whom ev¬
erybody could vote for? I would
name Col. E. W. Hammond, for the
Senate in the 26tb Senatorial dis¬
trict, composed of Butts, Fayette
and Spalding counties; and Col. N.
M. Collins for Representative of
Spalding county. I do not think
Spalding could put up two better
men.
When will the Griffin’fishing party
pay the Shoals another visit? The
people around the Shoals would be
glad to see them back again, and
wear those pleasant smiles which the
Griffin ladies always carry wherever
they go. Come as soon as you can
and bring all of the first family.
Master E. H. Rawls leaves for
Griffin this morning to spend a lew
days,
B. B. Bagwell, the murderer of the
negro Bill Wormblo, has not yet
been arrested. lie is on the scout,
but Sheriff Howard says if they will
the three (3) warrants, over to
him, he will run him in at once.
People all down here say if they
have as much as fifty cents left when
through hoeing cotton they must
have the News, weekly if not daily.

DEPUTY MARSHAL S REPRIMANDED
A Case Before Commissioner Erwin
That Failed to Pan Out Well.
Sunday’s Telegraph.
There was brought before United
States Commissioner L. M. Erwin
yesterd-y two young men, Will
Woodward and Benjamin Gray, from
Butts county charged with illicit dis
til!w 6 . It was developed by the evi
dence that these young men were ar
rested by Deputies Cherry a Pope
in the road near Woodward’s place,in
Butts county. They had a still and
cap in their buggy, and were on
their way to establish a legal dislillr
ry. They were arrested without a
f arrant and the property sized with
out authority of law. There was no
deputy collector with them and none
came to Macon with them.
The young men employed T. B,
Mills, of Griffin, to represent them,
but as soon as the testimony was in
Commissioner Erwin discharge the
prisoners and reprimanded the mar
shals.}He Baid a deputy marshel has
the outhority to arrest without war
rant violators of the revenue laws
when caught at the still in the act,
but not otherwise, and when such
cases are brought before the commis
sioner a warrent is sworn oat by the
deputy csllector. In the case of yes
serday there was no such effidavit be
fore Commission Erwin upon which
a warrant could issue under the
circumstances, he discharged the
men and reprimanded the deputy
marshals- They will probably learn
alesson and will go slower next
time-
Tbe young men charged with the
offense have the reputation of being
honest, indus' rions and law-abiding
citizens and were dragged away
from there homes and brought all
