The recent experiments in employment of ‘‘cycles’’ of various sorts for army use in the spring military exercises in Eng¬ land seem to' demonstrate the futility of expecting that class of machinery to be of much practical value for this service. The ascents of long hills had to be made by the cyclist volunteers slowly and with toil on foot, because the machines could not be ridden; a carriage to be ridden and worked by four men, and to carry a M a x i m gun, broke down utterly; ths “Centipede,* or flying sapper, a machine on right wheels, carrying intrenching tools, engineering appliances and men, broke in two and had to be abandoned, and there were numerous minor acci¬ dents in only two days’ trials. So long aa the operations of war cannot be am- fined to nice, smooth asphalted floors, and conducted daintily, these machines are possible not likely to be worth much among military appliances— Now York Rtmjc J *?8T PERFECT Its superior excellence proven in millions eminent Endorsed by the heads of the . The Stab is the only New York newspaper possessing the fullest confidence of the Na¬ tional Administration and the United Dem¬ ocracy of New York, the political battle gronnd of the Repnblic. Jeffersonian Democracy, pure and simple, is good enough for the Stab. Single hand¬ ed among the metropolitan press, it has stood by the men called by the great Democ¬ racy to redeem the government from twenty-five years of Republican wastefulness and corruption and despotism to the South. For these fflur years past it has been tins werv ing In its fidelity the administration of Grov¬ er Cleveland. It is for him now—for Cleve¬ land and Thurman—for four years more of Democratic honesty in our national aflairs, and of continued national tmnqnility and prosperity. For people who like that sort of Democracy the Stab is the paper to read. The Stab stands squarely on the National Democratic platform. It believes that any tribute exacted from the people in excess of the demands of a government economically administered is essentially oppressive and dishonest. The scheme fostered and cham¬ pioned by the Republican part-of making the government a miser, wringing millions an nually from the poopl s and locking them up in vaults to serve no purpose but invite waste fulness and dishonesty, it regards as a mon¬ strous crime against the right of American citizenship. Republican political jugglers may call it ‘protective taxation;’’ the Stab’s name for it'is robbery. Through and through the Stak is a great newspaper. Its tone is i ure and wholesome, its news serviee unexceptionable. Each issue presents an epitome of what is best worth knowing of the world’s history of yesterday. Its stories are told in good, quick, pictur- eque.Edglish, and mighty interesting read¬ ing they are. The Suhdav Bias is as good as the best, class magazine, and prints about the same amount of matter. Besides the day’s news it is rich in spesial descriptive articles, ato ries, snatches of current literature, reviews, art criticism, etc. B ,r ' ttc’a hiimatiblc hu¬ mor sparkles in it 0 1 umus; Will Caricton’s delightful letters ..re i i its choice offerings.
