Tt • W.o - .a of Costa Rica.
Tbe litr delays at the various wayaids
stations ;.:.ord excellent opportunities of
observing the different types of Costa
Ricans; for side br side with tbe traveled
gentleman, attired with scrupulous re¬
gard to tbe fashions of this last quarter
of the Nineteenth century, stand the
barefooted men of the peon class. In
nearly every case more than decently
garbed, bat with the silken scarf about
the waist and the huge machete which
are the insignia of their rank in life. These
groups are alvvrr - > turesque, for the
costume of the w •■> .i alone is sufficient
to add a charm to me rapid succession
of pictures ever passing ha affluence of
color and form before the eyes of the ob¬
servant traveler.
These women, even small girls, wear
full starched skirts that touch the
ground, only displaying their small bare
feet as the folds sway in the motion of
walking. From living so much in the
open air and ( -n the amoiTht of exer¬
cise taken, tin \ arly all glory in splen¬
didly developed sta, which, with their
rounded arms, u.o fully displayed by
the low, much befrilled waists worn
by them all, differing only in the matter
of more or less adornment. Still, over
their shoulders they dispose the folds of
a silk or woolen scarf, or a bright colored
handkerchief, which usually only reveals
the full throat and the graceful curve of
the arm and shoulder.
While referring to the beauty of their the
peon women It must be added that
pleasing appearance lasts only with the
years of their first youth. Whether the
exercise and the open air together pro
dace a too early maturity, ' r, and and in in conse¬
quence a too early decay, it is hard to
say —tho result is there all the same.
Side by side with the young and hand¬
some daughter, the picture of bloom¬
ing health, stands tbe mother—a worn
and wrinkled crone—tho two pictures of
•‘She;’’ and looking from one to the
other tho heart is moved with the same
compassion with which poor Holly gazed
upon the awful remains of that imperial
loveliness that nt iad wrought such havoc
with his middle aged affections.—Costa

Bat Not Quite none for.
Speaking of curious advertising, they
tell that a certain fashionable pastor was
taken in, but not quite done for, by a
manufacturer of a patent medicine. It
seem3 that he does not very carefully ex¬
amine the requests for announcements
sent to him until he stands up to read
them in the pulpit. They usually consist
of notices of prayer meetings, social
gatherings and other matters relating to
the congregation, but along with them
are always communications from other
churches, and these commonly consist of
printed circulars. After reading out a
number, a few Sundays ago, tire minister
started with a neatly printed page that
began with a scriptural quotation about
longevity, and proceeded with an argu¬
ment hi favor of the possibility and duty
of attaining old age. He is a good elo¬
cutionist, and ho delivered a paragraph
in good style. Then he furtively glanced
down toward the bottom of the page and
found that the reading matter led into an
advertisement. He made the discovery
in time to save himself, although he had
to stop awkwardly, and his hearers were
at a loss to know why be did not finish.

The Brazilian Empire’s Progress.
The illness of the Brazilian emperor re¬
calls what he has done, and encouraged
to be done, for his empire. Twenty years
ago Brazil had nine insignificant cotton
manufactories, all together having 8S3
spindles. There are now In that country
forty-six such manufactories, five of
which alone have 40,000 spindles. They
make yearly 83,000,000 of yards of cot¬
ton goods. This is but one item, which
is paralleled in every direction. The
country has also progressed in agricul¬
tural production quite as remarkably as
in manufactures. The Argentine Repub¬
lic in South America aione has kept pace
with Brazil. Thirty years ago Dom
Pedro was In a struggle with all sorts of
conservatism and bigotry, which resisti-d
progress. lie persisted in importing uui
chinery and tools and ideas, and has
lived long enough to know that he has
triumphed. The crowning result is t'
recent abolition of slavery.—Globe L
