And Will Draw Cotton This Season From Afar Off-Freigbts Lower¬ ed One Seventh. The Griffin Hoard of Trade saw the cotton season about to open with & freight of 49 cents from hero to Savannah, while Atlanta, only paid 45 and Macon 40. This meant that Griffin was to work under a disadvan tage the a!. lo season. It meant that we migh void our immediate trade, but tha ill points far enougn away woc.-i ship toother points. The Hjard addressed the mana gers of the Central railroad and asked that as a competitive point, and nearer to Savannah than Atlanta, Griffin be given Atlanta’s rate. This seem 3 a moderate and reasonable re quest, but it was refused. The Hoard of Trad'j then sent a committee to A ■■■■• a to argue the matter before the railroad commis sion, as noted in these columns, and asked for their legal right under its rulings. Yesterday they were ap praised that the commission had fixed the rate on cotton from here to Savannah at '■! r ents. This is a r, iuetion of 8 cents, o more than one- eventh from tbe lor- mer rate. It means 62^ cents a bale more for cotton and 35 cents a bale advantage over Atlanta. In other words, it means an eighth of a cent more for cotton than could otherwise have been paid, and that means that w a will get the cotton from Jackson lo Woodbury and beyond. In fact, no sooner was the rate given than cotton commenced to come in, four days earlier than ever before. Yesterday morning J. W. & R. F. Crawford, of Pike county, better known as the “Crawfo.d Brothers,” brougnt in the first bale and stored in at the Brick ware bouse. New York Store, INDIANA’S HOI BATTLE. To He Fought In Joint Debate Between tbe Candidates Washington, xng, 18.— The Indiana campaign will in all probability be tho most exciting in the history of that State. The suggestion frotn'Indianapo lis that the two candidates for Governor make joint canvass is received here with approval by both sides. Colonel Matson has replied to acommumcation from the Democratic Committee there, stating his perfect willingness to meet General Hovey on the stump, and General Hovev expresses himself with equal favor on the subject. It is, therefore, more than probable that a jolut canvass between the two gentleman will be arranged. Colon el Matson is the younger of the two. He is about 45 years of age, most com pactly built, has a full, agreeable voice and, while hot especially fluent, is an easy and effective speaker. He is a man of dignity and not give* to aoec dotes iu his public addresses. General Hovey is 64 years of age, though well preserved, aud still fall of activtiy, He resents with same spirit the imputation that his age will interfere with his usefulness in the campaign. He, too, is * compactly built man, of medium height, possesses a strong voice aud a serious delivery. He is of a high ly excitable nature, resembling in that particaler, the late General John A. Lo gan. Both Colonei Matsoa^and General iiovey were valiant soldiers in the late war and are conspicuous champions of pension legislation m the present House, a11 the reports received by Democrat ic leaders here from Indiana encourage the hope of Democratic success there iu November. The party’s organization, indeed, is represented as being mmm *nd enthusiastic. Subscrib are liberal, aud every man‘* heart siucvrely enlisted in the fl«bL Ex Senator McDonald arrived here and adds his testimony to the news already received on this poit says: “Things look very favorable the >' Democrats—have never had any about Indiana's going Democrat Conditions are very favorable to us. think we filial! carry the state by a majority.
