C LEVELAND'S Lick. A dispatch from Dayton, Ohio, ex plains that for some time the rc-pnb lican prose of that region had been in ecstasy over the fact that James Ryder, an expert Irish blacksmith, who in 1884 voted for James G. Blaine for president, was making a model horso shoo for Ben Harrison, which was to have been presented to him, with a great demonstration, by Governor Foreaker. The shoe is an elegant specimen of export workman ship, and is entirely of old horse- Bhoe nails, collected in every slate and territory in the union. The shoe is completed, but it seems the honest old Iri8bmau*chnnged hia-mine some what, for he uas sent it to Pres idelft Grover Cleveland, with the following letter: Dayton, Ohio, Aug. 28, 1888 PRESIDENT G HOVER CLEVELAND — Honored Sir:— I lake great pleasure in presenting you with a horse shoe mado by and old Irishman out of American steel, an ornamented with it horseshoe nail from each and every state in.the union. I am an Irish man, a Connaught Ranger, who voted for James G, Blaine in 1884- but have comoto the conclusion that you are the true friend of all Irishmen and workingmen, and I shall vote for yon, if God spares my life, in 1888. May good luck follow you all yonr life, is the wish of an honest, hauUworking Irishman. Yours respectfully, James Ryder. It is the heaviest blow that has been aimed at the baggiDg trust: That the cotton underwriters of this board will make no discrimina tion against cotton covered with any light weight close woven material of reasonable strength, provided the differences in weight botweeu the material used and a good quality of baggiDg be |eompensated by^ extra bands (soy eight or nine to the bale instead of five or six) and that the sample holes be Isffectually covered, 'j As previous communication to you indicates, it is the belief of the com committee investigating this subject that to a large extent the appalling losses by fire during the past season hate been due to the bagging usod in covering the bales and that flimsy looseswoven cloth with tho fibre standing ont from the surface is as inflammable as tho cotton itself. A change, therefore, to any woven raa terial cannot,in tboir opinion, involvo additional risk. It is also apparent that ebahges iu the style of covering and binding could be introduced, at very slight additional cost, that would render fires in American cotton as rare as with Iadia and Egyptian. The committee believe that tho use of eiose*>woven burlap, 14 ounces or one pound to the yard, or what is •tyled bop sacking, 24 ounces or 1$ pounds to the yard, or their equiva lent, with two or three additional bauds and with care used to tlur ougbly cover the bale, would bring immunity from a large potion of the loss by fire and relieve theindnsfry POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENTS.
