Last i riilaj evening Jim Redmond a negro who went to war with Will Dobbins, as his servant, camo back to bis old homo in Gordon county. Mr Dobbins was killed in Marryland, and it was reported that Redmond was killed also, but ho escaped in some way, and since tho war has been living in Washington city. About three month ago he started on a trip to Culhoan and arrived last week. It was the first time he bad been heard from since Mr. Dobbins was killed. On Wednesday eytning last Piag Rudolph,—Wiliam and Dauiol Par i^h (all colored) were in lirinr creek swamp, in Burk county, on W. J. Hatcher’s place, getting shingles, and Daniel was standing in the wa¬ ter waist deep, cutting a huge tioe, when he saw a heavy cloud coming up rapidly. He started to erne out, but the wind stiiking the tree, alreaey weakened by the ex. it fell, and a limb caught Daniell, burying him under the water, and when he w is extricated by hi3 companion Lo was dead. Tho reient heavy ruins have caused the creek to ov■ (flow, and tho swamp is completely filled with water. There has baen a soap m ne diB covered neur Crawfordville. Tie Detnocial suys- ‘Taliaferro is doom ed to be one of tho most wondoi ful counties in Georgia, or the south. On Wednesday of this week Mr. D. A. Saggus gave us a sample of tho natural soap took; bom a hill on Dr. J. J. Ken’s place, near town. We took the artielp, and, to test i’, wash ed our face and hands with it, and it cut the dirt from the skin and made the water lather like manufactured soap. It is exactly the color of tur pentine soap, and has a peculiar smell. There is money in this liat ural soap miue, and some enterpris iog capitalist would tnakea big thing of it here. There is not another place in the world that can boast of a natural soap mine. AN IMPORTANT CONFERENCE Decides Ihat a Western Headquarters Is Unnecessary, Chicago; Sept. 17. — Chairman Brice, of the National Democratic Committee, and representative Dem ocrats from Wisconsin, Michigan, In diana and Illinois, were in confer¬ ence at the Palmer House this morn ing. There were present National Committeemen Phelps, of Illinois ; Kelly, of Minnesota; State Chair¬ man Doran, of Minnesota; Camp¬ bell, of Illinois; Hunter, of Iowa; Weston, of Michigan ; Jewett, of In diana; Usher, of Wisconsin, and Mr Charles J. Fox, of Washington. The question of establishing a branch headquarters of the National Com mltteemen for the Northwestern States was discussed. It was almost unanimously decided that such a thing would be impracticable and unnecessary. Adjournment was ta ken, with the understanding that the Western Committee will get about what they want, {ami that an extra effort is to be put forth from this time on in the States of Michigan, Illinois and Minnesota. A Hint t® Puny People, From their arrival on this planet to their usually early departure from it, people of weak constitutions and angular physiques dormice pass a sort of half-exietence. Like they burrow in thei-i home retreats, afraid of heat, afiaid of cold, constantly afraid that the shadow of the dread reaper will ma terialize and exact the forfeit which he de¬ mands from all, sooner or later.
