It was a serious blow, but Mr, >. von is recording. The dul uOMi of our city is the oident result of oar plauters employing all their time iu housing their crops. The corn crop, which has been supcrabnnd ant, is being gathered, and the pea crop, which is simply immense, is being pick ed and housed. The potato crop is re ported super fine, but is not being gen erally dug. The Fine to d ! g potatoes is immcdiatelly after the v ; nes die. If left in the ground *' d time they are li able to sprout, o. a „ clay soil will like ly rust. The cane crop is developing finely, and will continue to grow until frost, which will not likely bo before the middle of October. Tho illustrati... of a magazine form one of the largest items of tiie expense of its production; the elimination of this expense subscrip¬ either to diminish tho price of tions, or to augment the payments to authors, or both; and either would be a benefit to literature. Again, under the jiresent system, a large portion of the articles arc written mainly to serve as a vehicle for the illustrations; without the illustrations, they would not be worth printing; consequently, if there wero no .illustrations, the articles would not be written, and their place would lie sup¬ plied by articles that were worth print¬ ing—another gain to literature, and a gain both in quality and space. Indeed, a well illustrated article is very seldom read at all. The purchaser of the maga¬ zine looks at tho pictures, and perhaps examines so much of the text as may en¬ able him to form some idea of what the picture represents; he says to himself that ho will read tho article some other day, and before that day comes the next issue of the magazine has appeared, and the same thing is repeated. Wero thero no pictures, there would bo an end of this.—Julian Hawthorne in Belford’s Magazine. IT.tgue of Ilats in Chino. Tho prize offered by tho Australian government for a riddance of tho rabbits which infest that country may afford a suggestion to the authorities in China to offer induce¬ ments which 51. Hay, There! The News urges every farmer in this section to cut and cure as much hay as possible. The very wet sea sou has made it possible to save an abundant supply of fine bay from our native grasses, and if we do not take advantage of it, it will look like neglecting the bountiful provis¬ ions which Providence has made for at. The laws of nature are beauti fal in their adaptation to the wants of man, but man must develop ener gy and reason to avail himself of their benefits. Here we bave the finest of native grasses, and for ages we have neglected catting and car¬ ing this superabundant vegetation for tho winter. It will startle the Southern planters to learn that the hay crop of the United States is worth about as much as the cotton crop. The experience of those in our section who have devoted atten tion to tho caring of bay proves con clusively that there are more clear money iu an acre in hay than there is in an acre of cotton. Of course it would not do to put everything in hay, but it is wise to diversify the crops of this section. perfect Its saperlor excellence proven In million* of homes for more than a quarter of a cen tury.
