HIE BARBECUE.
A Fine Feast but a Yery Small Crowd,
Thu barbecue for the benefit of the Metho
d'.st church at Orchard Hill yesterday was a
great success so far as the eatables were
concerned, with an abundant number of car
casses of sheep, shoats and beef, all nicely
cooked and served. But the crowd was not
there in such large numbers, as the ocj
easion should have brought.
There were plenty of candidates there
making up about half the crowd, and even
including Alderman Newton, whose ward
apparently lies in another direction, bnt
who tries to make himself {at home any!
where. The hotel men came down to get a
square meal and Griffin was very well repre
sented altogether.
But the farmers very sensibly, took advan
tage of the pleasant day to piek out all the
cotton they could, and thereby many of
them missed their dinner.
Still, the Orchard Hill girls were there,
and the presence of one or two of them was
CDough to {make up for the absence o’f a
whole brigade of their brothers and fathers.
Some Barnesville young ladies were also
present, but they couldn’t compare,of course
with SpaldiDg county beauty, although they
did very well.
Altogether it was a vei y pleasant occasion
and as the provisions were all donated, the
church must have cleared a very neat little
sum.
Judge Becks and Col. Coilens effectually
dispersed the crowd witli speeches shortly
after dinner.
Middle Gaorgia Argus: “We would ear
cstly urge every voter in Batts county to go
to the polls on the third day of October and
cast their ballot for the state den ocratic
ticket. Tbe negroes met in Griffin on Sat
urday and put a negro against Judge Hall
for senator and if our people treat this sleet
ion with indifference he mayjbe elected.
Don’t forget the day. Go to your district
precinct and support your party.”
