Yesterday was Capt. J. II. U bite s
birthday. Ho says he is thirty eight
years old, but with Liw martial bearing
and handsome, clear cut features ho
does not look as if that many years had
passed over his head. Still, there is
nothing like a clear conscience to keep
a man looking youthful; and with his
consistent record as the cheapest dealer
iu clothing iu the South, never selling
shoddy goods and always treating every
customer fairly, it is little wonder that
the senior member of tho noted firm of
J. H. White, Jr., k Co., should carry
off birthdays smilingly and show no evi
deuce of ago.
Cheerfulness is ono of the most vatua
bio growths cuLivatible iu the gaidenof
life. It ia a preventive for many of the
ills of life, while its delicate and pleas
ant leflucuco fills the atmosphere of
one’s presence with the most grateful
aroma. Cheerfulness should be cultiva
ed under all circumstances, and it will
bloom under all conditions and brignten
even a winter of barren hopes. It is a
jewel of the heart, which when it is injur
ed covers its wounds like the oyster
with a pearl, the jewel of clieerfn'uess.
What matters it that things can’t go as
you’d have them? It is unreasonableness
itself to want tho whole world of your

center of influence. Men should be
able to differ iu opinion without any
acrimony of thought or word.

This compels a local faction con
test which might have been and
should have been, prevented. The
result will be that Mr rlewstt wiil be
elected, and those who oppose him
have gained noffiiug- We think
they will have lost a great deal.
Oar anxiety is regarding the Na
tional and State tickets, If they do
not suffer, wo can afford to regard
the outcome oi the local situation
with complacency. If every Demo
crat will pledge himself to make the
election of President and Governor
the first consideration, the local con
test vnay result iu a positive advan
tage to the party.
The disadvantage is, as we stated
yesterday, the unfavorably impres
sion it will create through the coun
try. Lot it, then, be the pride of
Democrats of every faction to show
that all fears of disadvantage to tie
National and State tickets are
groundless.

Farmer," "Many persons," says The Michigan
“who are contemplating tho use
of an inenbator tho coming season are
looking at the different makes and making
inquiry as to their merits. The matter
of selecting one should bo carefully con¬
sidered. No doubt there are many ma¬
chines in the market which do excellent
work; there are others which are perfectly
useless and simply ‘catch pennies.’ First
consider how much time you have to do-
veto to one, and don’t "bo deluded into
buying an incubator that tho inventor
claims needs little or no attention, can be
operated by a child, or (if it has a self
regulator) will run for twenty-four hours
without varying a degree. Wo do not
’ existence. In
believe such an ono is in
our experience self than regulating hot incubators
are less laborious water ones,
yet tho anxiety attending them is so much
greater that "wo give preference to tho
latter every time."
Didn’t Want It Duplicated.
A curious looking craft, built in a Chi¬
nese yard near Tnnkadoo, a sort of stern
wheel boat in which the motive power
was supplied by a number of coolies work¬
ing with tlieir feet, was seen passing
down the Nile by an enthusiastic amateur
photographer, a foreigner. He began to
get it, his apparatus ia order to photograph
when he was accosted by an officer,
who said: “No can makee picture this
steamer; bye’n by you go to England side he
rnako all same." And to make sure
warned tho foreigner with his camera off
tho river bank.—New York Sun.
