the Fight is nett jermey.
Some lukewarm Democrats
last December, the President, by
message recommending lower

New Jersey, because the
turers there were rich and
But somehow Democrats are

would loae strength.
Mr. Richard Atwater, a member
the firm of Whitalt, Tatum A
the largest glass manufacturers in
the country, has been interviewed by
a representative of the New York
Herald, at Millville, N. J. Mr. At¬
water said : “I am a Republican arid
four years sgo supported and voted
for Blaine ; but I tell you 1 am
thankful he was not elected.
Course, I osn only spesk for
what the other members of the firm
think I do not kaow, and I cannot

victions, I am free to speak of them.
•hall certainly vote for Cleveland.
He has given us a puro and able Ad-
ministration. As to the issues of tbo
campaign, I know that the Democrats
are on the right side, and the Rcpub
lioans on the wrong side. Tbo opera
tion of the Mills Bill could not have
anything but a beneficial effect, and
it would vastly stimulate our foreign
trade. . . . The glass blowers
recciyo the highest wages paid in
this country, but this has nothing to
with the tariff, for in some of the in¬
dustries very low wages arc being
paid. The reason for the good wa¬
ges prevailing in the glass industry
it principally because of the perlect
organization of the workmen, and
the method they have of regulating
the increase of glass blowers. The
tariff has nothing at all to do with
the wages paid.”
In Newark the charter election
was held Tuesday, showing a Demo
eratio gain of 700. For the first
time in thirty years the Democrats
carried the city at the charter elec
tion previous to the Presidential elec
tion.
If these changes are taking place
in the manufacturing centers, what
will be the Democratic mnjority
when the rural districts arc heard
from ?
Down with the war tariff!
OLD HUTCH’S TENDERNESS,
“Old Hatch" was remarkably gen
tie in bis squeezes last week in the
Chicago market. While he scooped
in over $3,000,000, he got his pelf
largely from the richest, He gave
orders that nobody should be
hurt, and only two little failures oc
curred. Remarkably little has keen
generally known regarding the early
life of B. P. HutchinsoD. His great
September corner on wheat has been
the wonder of the market, Bent up
the price of that grata and caused
the making and loss of fortune all
over the country. “Old Hutch" is a
New England Yankee. He began
bis bnsiness career in the little vil
lage of North Reading, N. II., about
forty six years ago, when he entered
the employ of a man named Edwin
Foster who kept a conutry store.
Here be was paid $20 a year to look
•fter the store, and when Dot so em
ployed to mend children's shoes in
the rear of the store. Mr.
Foster employed another lad
is the store, to whom be gave
$30»year. Ben did not like tbis
distiuctiou in salsries rod rebelled
against it The boy was paid tlO
more a year because he could ‘‘read
writing hand,” and was therefore
moro valuable to bis employer than
Ben. Finally Ben obtained perroia
sion from Mr. Foster to use part of
of an old shed, which be built
into a kind of a store, with patched
door on the side and a window in
front whereupon was inscribed;
-Ben Hutchinson,Boots and Shoes.'
Here Ben made boots and shoes on
his own account. Every Saturday
be would go to Lynn on foot and buy
stock and sell the shoes that he had
made- Ho employed several boys
about the neighborhood to assist
him. When h$ returned from Lynn
ho always brought some “jim cracks ’
with him, which he would trade off
to the boys, and although he paid
them money for their work on Hat or
day, by Monday he managed to get
it all back by trading with them.
Ben was a natural trader. After a
while he got tired of bin small busi
ness and decided to go into business
in Lynn on a largo scale. While in
Lynn he discovered that some men
in the commission business were tnak
ing more money than he was with
ont doing any hard work, so he con
eluded to give up the manufacture
of shoes and go into the commission
business, which he did in 1850, on
Pearl street, Boston. After remain
there two years, ho went to Milwau
keo, wbero he started in general busi
ness. Finally, some years after, he
moved to Chicago and engaged in
wheat commission trading. Benja
min P. Hutchinson is now in Cbica
go. worth millions. Tho other lad
employed by Mr. Foster is still hard
at work managing tbo interest of the
United States Hotel in Boston, and
be dosn't know any thing about cor
ners.
THE FIGHT IN NEW VOUfc.
It is good nows that comes from
New York. The Democratic Con
gressmen who have been canvassing
there give a most encouraging ac
count of tho political ontlook in the
Empire State. Springer, of Illinois,
and McMillin, of Tonnossce, and the
two Breckinridgos agree in their es
timntes of tho situation. They have
all found abundant evidence of the
growth of tariff reform sentiment in
tho real pivotal constituencies whoso
choice will probably bo decisive of
the national contest. This growth of
sooud opinion is no partial develop
meat. It extends throughout tho
community, and cuts deep into the
Republican ranks. For example, at
Ithaca, after Mr. McMillin's expos
ure of the iniquities of the present
tariff, a call was read for the organi
zatiou of a Cleveland club in further
anco of tariff reform, and out of twen
ty professors who put their names
on tho roll no fewer than fourteen
woro converts drawn from the Repub
lican lines. And tho heather is afire
all over tho bill. Liborers rival pro
feasors in the earnestness of their do
rnand for a reduction of tho customs
duties. Tho workingmen take us
much interest as they used to show
in debates on finance during tho old
fight against soft money. And now,
as was conspicuously too case in tho
earlier contention, their common
sense and native shrewdness guide
them to a true measurement of tho
issue. They brush aside the specious
sophistries which the advocates of
false doctrines weave to ensnare
thorn. The protectionists find at
present,what the Greonbnckers found
ten years ago, that in this country,
as a rule, hard hands and hard heads
go together. The reports which tho
Democratic Congressmen bring from
New York carry an assurance of yic
tory, if tho lesson may bo expressed
in the direction, stand to your guns.
The advocates of tariff reform have
only to keep up tho fire of argument
and exposure which has already
wrought cofifusion in the ranks of the
enemy, and forced tho Republican
leaders to change front at tho thick
est of tho battle. In a good cause,
with an arbiter as intelligent as tho
average American voter, to fight is
to win.
The manufacturing city of Nt w-
Srk has made its answer to the argu
ment that democratic success will
ruin the industries of the coun¬
try. It conies in the form of a dem¬
ocratic victory and it is the first time
tor thirty years that such a thing has
occurred in that city just preceding
a presidential election.
