My P oor Back!
That «poor back ” is held responsible for more than its share of the sufferings of
mankind. If your dog bites a man who kicks it, do you blame the dog? On the same
principle the kidneys utter their protsot against nervousness, impure blood, aad
resulting constipation. These force them lo extraordinary work in ridding the
system of the poisons which are the result of effete matter retained in the
blood. Then the suffer#* says the back aches; the kidneys are dis-
easod. " Not yet;" but they will be unless the nerves are strengthened,
the blood purified, and th« constipation removed. These are the causes
of kidney troubles, and Paine’s Celery Compound removes them quickly,
With its tonic, purifying, and laxative effect, it also strengthens the weak
kidneys, making it almost infaUible i curing all diseases of the nerves and kid-
neys. If your hopes of cure have not been realized, try Fame’s Celery Com-
pound; it gives perfect health to all who complain of “their poor backs.” Price fl.OO.

THE SCHOOL CENSUS-
THE FIRST TAKEN IN GEORGIA
NINl’E 18*2
Shows.lon Per Cent More Children—
Whole Population Increased 100,-
000—The Different Cities.
The first school census of Georgia
since 1882 has just been completed.
The enumeration of the school
population was an arduous and im¬
portant work. In the labor of tak¬
ing, it amounted to about the same
as taking a census of the population
of the state, the enumerators going
from house to house.
The instructions were sent out
last March, and the 595 enumerators
have since put in 0,990 days work.
The maximum pay of the enumer¬
ators was $2 a day; so the state will
pay something less than $14,000 for
this school ceusus.
The system of enumeration is very
thorough and has brought together
a large mass of valuable informa¬
tion.
Mr. Orr has been at work for
months-verifying and consolidating
the reports and that arduous work is
about completed.
The total number of children of
school age in Georgia is 500,281,
against 508,722 in 1882, an increase
of 52,059 in six years, or a trifle
more than ten per cent.
In the cities and towns under local
school laws, according to the counter
ation, Atlanta has 7,332 wtiite and
5,462 colored children of school age,
a total of 12,791.
Macon has 2,120 white and 2,450
colored; total 4,570.
Savannah has 3,883 white and
4,272 colored; total 8,155.
Augusta has 4,891 white and
4,509 colored; total 9,400.
Brunswick has 807 white and 877
colored; total 1,084.
Carrollton has 253 white and 83
colored; total 330.
Athens has 1,101 white and 1,225
colored: total 2,32G.
Newnau bus 439 white and 470
colored; total 1,474
Rome has 884 white and 590 col
ored; total 1,474.
Columbus has 2.048 white and 2,-
082 colored: total 4,130
Cedartown has 285 white and 2G4
colored’ total 539.
Griffin has 472 whito and 932 col
ored; total 1,104.
Americas has 439 white and 837
colored; total 1,279.
West Point bas 213 white and 240
colored; total 453.
Waycti ss has 290 white and 318
colored; total 014.
Sandersviile has 190 white and
32 J colored; tot uI 510.
Dalton has 024 while «iui 309 col
ored; total 933.
The contrast of the two enumera
tions shows considerable increase in
the number of children of school age
of both white and colored.
Hi 1S82 there were 205.548 white
243,174 colored’
Now thare are 291,024 white and
207,057 colored—an increase of 27,-
070 white and 24,483 colored cbil

Congressman John 1). Stewart.
Henry County Weekly.
Judge John D. Stewart made a
rattling campaign speech iast Tues¬
day. He arraigned the Republicans
for their gross mismanagement of
the government under their quarter
of a centut v of rule. He adduced
many facts going to show that the
Republicans ate a party of aristo¬
crats wbo grasp the money bags of
the country and who oj pose tin* la¬
boring class. He shows most con
clusively that the rich manufacturers
of the North are protected by I ho
Government while the poor people
arc taxed on the mo.-, common nee
efiswrion of life. Judge Sfewitt’s re
form tariff ideas if curried into exe
cation are just .vbat the South t eeds.
The people of the Fifth OongreS
siona! District have never had a rep
resentative -ho better understands
their wants. Judge Stewart is a
man of the people, and the pulsation
of the public heart awakens a respon
sive chord in his own. His views
are broid, compr- ' o sive and states
manlike, tie is a friend of the
masses as against the privileged
classes, that is the money magnates
of the country. We congratulate
him on his brilliant record he has
made, and predict vet a broader
field of usefulness for him.
<fudge Stewart was followed by
Col. James A. Gray, Presidential
elector, who spoke for some minutes
on the qnestion at issue between the
parties. Col Gray’s speech was
ably delivered and well received by
our people.

The nr«Yf Soldier Bey.
nv miBkCK o. MoftRis,
The trump of war o'er the land had resoun¬
ded, »
The troops were preparing for battle ar.
ray ;
The youths of the land with their father*
and brothers
Wore all getting ready for the bloody af¬
fray.
One morn as the drum with Its lively tattoo.
For volunteers loudly was calling.
A mother w as spenking to her only child
While the tears down her oheeks were fall¬
ing.
In her hand she held clasped the hilt of a
sword,
Whose blade In the sun light glistened;
She w as telling him how it w as used by Ins
si re.
And his eyes brightly shone as lie listened,
“My sou, take this weapon and wield it for
the right,
In its scabbard ne’er let it remain ;
Until you have fought a brave so.dier’s
fight
And are reacy to use it again ' 1
.
Then round hiu she buckled ;>is bran- :. til¬
er’s sword,
And sobbing aloud In her grief,
She hade him be true to his country nndGod,
And to follow the lead of his chief.
Then a last parting kiss she gave toiler boy,
And kneeling she offered a prayer,
To the Father above to watch over liereliild,
And keep him always in Ills care.
That day as the troops went marching away,
They carried the young soldier boy,
Who had not a thought of the cannon’s fierce
roar;
But whose heart was throbbing with joy.
In every tierce tight lie was always in front ;
Not a fear of the foe had lie—
But at last ho was wounded and left midst
the slain,
Not a face of a friond could he see.
When the battle was over aBd ijuiet remained*
His friends came and took him away ;
And summoned his mother to her dying boy’s
si 3e,
That to her his last words he might say.
When she came and knolt by her dying boy’s
side,
He begged her to shed not a tear ;
For he had fought in the service of country
and God,
And soon at His throne would appear.
Then he said, “To you, mother, I return
father’s sword;
No rust on its blade will you see—
Farewel), mother dear, may we soon meet
in Heaven !
I die for my country and dear liberty,”
If, “a numerous fioushold is the safe

Griffin U the liveliest, pluckiest, most pro-
grsssi ve town in Georgia. This is do byper-
boltcal description, as ths record of the last
five years will show.
During that time it has built aed pot into
most Ctirrotwful operation a *100,000 eotioa
factory and Is now building another with
nearly twice the capital. It has pat up a
lsige iron and brass foundry, a fertilissr fac-
ory, an immense ice and bottling works, a
•ash and blind factory, a broom factory
opened up the finest granite quarry la the
U sited State*, and has many other enter¬
prises in on temptation. It has secured
another ailroad utiety raile* long, and while
oeaten on the greatest system in the South,
the Central, has secured connection with its
important rival, the East T enausee, Virginia
and Georgia. It has Just secured direct inde¬
pendent connection with Chattanooga tad
the Wt at, and has the President of a fourth
railroad residing here and working
to lt» ultimate completion. With
ita five white and three colored
ohurches.it is now building a *10,000 sew
Pre-byteriau church. It has Increased its
population by nearly one-fifth. It ha* at¬
tracted around its borders fruit growers from
nearly every State in the Union, until it Is
now surrounded on nearly every side by or¬
chards and tineyards. It ts the horn# of the
grape and Its wine making capacity has
doubled every year. It baa successfully
Inaugurated a system of publte schools, with
a seven years curriculum, second to none.
This is part of ths record of a half decade
and simply shows the progress of an already
admirable city, with the natural advantages
of haring the finest climate, summer aad
winter, in the world.
Griffin is the county seat of Spalding
county, situated in west Middle Georgia, with
a healthy, fertile and rolling country, 1160
feet above sea level. By the census of 1960, it
will have at a low estimate between 0,600 and
7,000 people, and they are all of the right
sort—wide-awake, up to the times, ready to
welcomo strangers and anxious to secure de
sirable settlers, who will not be any lew web
come if they bring money to help btrild up
the town. There Is about only one thing we
need badly Just now, and that is a Mg hotel.
We have several small ones, but their accom¬
modations are entirely too limited for oar
business, pleasure and health seeking gueete.
If you see auybody that wants a good loca¬
tion for a hotel in ths South, just mention
Griffin.
Griffin is the place where the Ganrnw
