FIOHTIHO THIS FRESHETS.
J, W, Watte, writing in the Cot
ton Planter, aaya bo has for a long
time entertained the opinion that
our people would be forced to give
op tbe bottom lands to grass, either
for moadow or for pasture. Anil
the earlier they realize this necessity
the better for I bom. Mauj depend
entirely on their fine bottom for
(heTorn anil fodder to feed their
stock If they fail iu this, which
they do on an average every third
year, they have their feed to buy;
when, if these lauds wee well set in
Burmnda or Moans grass, tbe crop
woold have been bousod before tbe
rains fell, at n cost of about $4 a ton
_which would be worth from $10 to
*20 a toD. owing to the market. Ln
acre of good bottom well set will
- yield from one to two tons at a cut
ting, and often ft second cutting can
bo bad. And tbo land, instead of
getting poorer by being washed
away, would grow richer by holding
its owu aud catchiog muoh of what
would pass by, by tbe aid of the
grass, and the only chance of losing
tbo crop is to be caught in tbe rain
while cutting, which is very rare, for
tbe crop is soon disposed of and put
boyond tbe reach of rain,
We all know that corn is an expen
sive crop at best. And from the
length of time it takes to mature,
it iH exposed to three dangerous sea
sons. May.Aagnst and September,and
lose one year in tbreo, which is a ruin
ousdraw back on tbo proms But the
grass will wait and take tbo chance
of better weather, and cost so much
less, And then when the barn is
will fillet!, tbe stock are apt to get
plenty, which is rarely tbe case when
the principal food is corn and foil
der, And again, all experience proves
that horses raised on grass and bay
are more valuablo than those raised
on corn and fodder alone.
It is a grant mistake to assuino
that the grasses cannot be grown
profitably in our climate, While
nearly all kind do well here, tbere
are two or three that seem to luxu
riate in this state, and as far south
as Texas, which is as far as he has
been, and no better hay grasses are
known to us, and one is pre-eminent
ly a grazing grass—referring to the
Bermuda, tbe other is tbo Moans
grass, which vields a tine coarse bay,
aud yields abundantly, nnd is well
suited to bottom lands.
In Mr. Watts, opinion it would be
better to'depeud on native grasses
for pasture and to graze these hot
tom lands with nil kinds of stock
a than to continue the present system,
for many au acre that was originally
very fertile has been s® often plow
od and then flooded that all the soil
has gone, leaving it too poor to
grow corn. If this land were well
Bet for Bermuda grass it might in n
few years be restored to fertility
and make a pustnre that would glad
den the heart of any farmer who
loves his stock as a farmer should.

Tbe young wife's suit for 1100,000
against Blaine, Sr., for alienating her
husband's affections, will make a big
stir if it ever come to trial. Tbe
young lady insists that she nevor
would have countenanced such sum
ary proceedings but for tbe brutal
way in which she was treated by tho
Blaine family upon her recent visit
to Augusta, in quest of her husband,
who, she says, was shut up against
bis will in the paternal household.
In the meantime a number of New
York tradesmen arc clamoring after
a very lively fashion for the settle
wont of sundry claims against tho
festive scion of tho Uncrowned King.
