been too uniformly high in comparison

J. C. Mauniug, of the Home Library

ing and Sunday school will be kept up
regularly at tbe old Presbyterian
church by those members who do not
propose to emmigrate with the body of

Emmett A. Heard, an old Griffin boy
aud former merchant of this city, now
of Covington, had the misfortune to
lose his gin house and five bales of cot
ton by fire one day last week. Tbe to
tid loss was about 81,500. No insur
ance.
Capt. R. Brauss, an old Confederate
soldier, handed in three dollars yester
day to the N*ws to be fowarded
to the uational campaigu com
mittee. This is the kind of De
mocracy that talks. Who will be
tho next? The time is short and the
national committee needs money.

papers now at hand say that there were

more Democrats iu New York City than
some Georgia papers are disposed to
give tho place credit for, as tne News

ceiving daily twenty or thirty bales
of cotton, which is being sold at
nine cents, one or two cents more
than we expected.

smoothly; money plentiful.
Two of our prettiest young ladies
are to be married in about ono
month. Another one will marry as
soon as she can get some one to have
her.

an election for delegates to meet

made love the first evening. The
South and the West may unite.
On yesterday i made a Hying visit
to Woodbury and found the people
quiet; heard Judge Nichols preach a
line sermon, got a good dinner and
came back on the 3 o’clock train.

A BIG FIRE.
The Alliance Warehouse at
and 185 Bales Burned.
There was a disastrous fire at

warehouse, a large building near
depot, burning down with the
contents. There is known to
been at least 185 bales of cottoD
the building, and how much
can not be told, as the books
burned with the building.
