POOR OLD BLAINE. The wreok of the campaign is not Ibe yenerable gentlesun whom tbe Demoorats have noninated for V ico President, hut James G. Blaine. At Albany, on Tuesday, Mr. Blaine well said be was in no condition to address an auduienc. The campaign has been too much for him, and ho approaches its close a mental, moral and physical wreck. In his speech at Albany, Tuesday, October 80, Mr. Blaine thus referred to the Sackville inoident, which topic be bee made peculiarly his own: “You ere reading a good deal in Democratic papers just now as to Lord Sackville being recalled. The Cleveland administration wants to •how its indignation for his inierven lion. It would only take one word to recall him. Three foreign minis¬ ters in tbe history of our government thus far have had their passports given them by the adrainistaatio* at Washington for doing less than Lord Sackuille has done in interven tion with our affairs, and Mr. Bayard or President Cleveland neither one of them (I make that prediction to day; there is a week left of the cam¬ paign) wilt dare to send Lord Hack ville borne. Mr. Phelps, tho Ameri¬ can minsister in London, as we get the news over the cable, is dining out at Hatfield with Lord Salisbury, to •ee if Lord Salisbury will not re lieve Mr. Cleveland and Mr. Bayard by recalling Lord Sackville, so teat we are not only to have the British minister intervening in our affairs, but we are to have tbe Birtisb pro mier in London decide whether bo •hall stay and intervene some more. That is the situation.” While Mr. Blaine was making this f peeoh tbe Cabinet at Washington was considering tho form of the dis¬ missal of tbe British Minister, which was communicated to him promptly. Mr. Blaine has sought, by all the ingenuity of an irresponsible adven¬ turer, to embarrass the Administra tration in tbe very deliuate position into which it had been brought by a conspiracy concocted by tbe Republi can leaders and tbe British Minister, But Mr. Cleveland has again vindi cated the confidence reposed in him, and denied to Blaine, by the Amen can people four yetfrs ago. Haste at such a tim« deprives the final action of nil effect Delibern tion was essential to dignity. Due care was takeu to observe all tbe lisa ges of nation, and to avoid auy of tbe blunders into which Mr. Blaine was betrayed wl en Secretary of State. The President has been firm, di rect. straightforward in this whole matter. He has placed bit objections to the coarse of tbe British Minis tar on grounds easily understood, and which neither the English Cabi net nor the leaders of tbe Republi can parly in America can contest. Palee prophet does Mr. Blaine •how himself, when prophecy in vain. In hie eagerness for advan tags, be oonid not wait the elow re inltaof time.
