But the Western Union does not sustain the last assertion : it said it would send the returns by conn ties ae aeon as heard, and so far it baa sent very few of them. Hill is re-elected governor of New York by at least 15,000 plurality, and Gen. John M. Palmer has as good a chance to win the governor’s office in Indiana as Fifer, his opponent. Gen. Harrison is elected president, hav¬ ing carried all the northern states, piob- ably, except Connecticut, New Jersey and Indiana, which have voted for Cleveland, though there is gome doubt as to Indiana. The northwestern state* and California have all probably voted for Harrison, though some of them have shown decided democratic gains. Thar* are no definite returns as to congress. The Times says congress is still demo¬ cratic. The Tribune claims congress republi¬ can by 90 to 95 majority. Cad*-Gaul. New Yob*, Nov. 7—8 y m,—Returns come in very slow. Cleveland's majority in New York city and Brooklyn will be about 69,000. Returns from up oounties ■how such heavy republican gains, how¬ ever. that, if continued, will overcome this. There is a general feeling that Harrison will carry the state. The Eve¬ ning Sun concedes the state to Harrison. Gill is probably be elected governor. Bis majority in New York oity alone is 85,000. Grant is sleeted mayor. Large republican gains qre reported in Connecticut; but both sides claim the •tate. No definite returns from Indiana, but both sides claim the state confidently. West Virginia is in doubt; result not known till morning. Mitts Is re-elected in Texas, and Carlisle in Kentucky. The republicans make a clean sweep In New Hampshire, and Nevada end Michigan have gone republican. Harrison wires the Tribune that In¬ diana is safe for him. Virginia is democratic by good major¬ ities. Quay is very confident of republi¬ can victory. Excitement in tyieaity is intense. Park Row, in front of the newspaper offices, is impassable. Oneida county, New York, Cookling’s old home which went democratic in ’84, give Harrison two thousand majority. Suffolk county, demoerhtio in ’84, shows a republican gain of 1,200. Cleveland has been knifed in Queens county and Brooklyn. Tammany Is charged with treacliy by the democratic managers here. New Jersey has goue democratic by 6,000. Later—Connecticut Is now claimed by the democrats by 859. New York, Nov. 7, 4:80 a. m.— (Spe¬ cial.}—The Sun says: At this hour, however, most favorable returns are customarily received, and later returns will be likely to reduce the plurality somewhat. However, unless there is a decided change from the re. port of gains now received, Harrison will come down to Bronx with over 80.000 plurality. We can’t now figure at over 72,000 or 73.000 plurality for Cleveland hi the state. Hill runs ahead of Cleveland in all quarters heard from of the Pivotal State. Latest reports from Connecticut indi¬ cate the election of the Harrison ticket by from 800 to 1,000. Later returns from New Haven may cut this down somewhat. Nothing but vague rumors have bee* received from Indiana, but so far as re- oeived shows light democratic gains. Corrected returns received from coun¬ ties in this state so far, increase Harri¬ son’s plurality to 10,000. Vague dispatches have been received from Indiana, and so far as they indicate anything, they point to republican gain*. Whatever doubt was raised by report* that Illinois had gone democratic was dissipated by the latest dispatches from Chicago, which say that the republican electoral ticket has a plurality of not less than 20,000. In Connecticut the vote is so close that an official count may be necessary to de¬ ride the contest. New York, Nov. 7,7 p. m.—Although Harrison’s election is conceded by the morning papers of all political faiths, the excitement here continues intense. The Park Row and Broadway front bul¬ letins are impassable, and also uptown in front of the republican headquarters. The democrats catch at every straw of hope, and are much encouraged at re¬ ports of the largely reduced republican majority in Illinois. The News goes *0 far as to predict Cleveland’s re-election on the report that Illinois had gone dem¬ ocratic. The Post, however, admits 90,- 000 republican majority In Illinois, and the Chicago morning papers concede that Harrison lias carried the state.
