Courier Journal: It ia natural the Proteetioniata nawapapera Meribe the defeat of the to the revenue reform ideas and geetiona of bis last annual But thia view ia auatained neither tue facts of the aitnation, ner by logod baasi* of theoretical don. The truth ia that but for issue of a revision and reduction the war tariff, we should have UOthing tangible to stand on should have gone to the country Tided among ourselves to exactly the aame assaults which the message, the afills Bill and the plat form have enabled ua to meet the force and effect of an union on a logical idea. Them was no eacaping the of tax reform. It pressed for Station through the enormous and menacing Treasury surf lus. effort to evade it would bava been OQoe hopeless and criminal. •very effort to face it was bound be misrepresented. ’Bhe safe wee the brave course adopted Qrover Cleveland; and, ao far ita procuring him bis defeat, it ly strengthened him. Except for he must have had to rely upon broken reed of a Oivil Service which bad gone down under its weight of impracticability and gruity, out of harmony at once tiie spirit of our representative ernment baaed on party ty, end out of accord with jo sympathies and traditions. Under a system such as ours, fleas can not be divorced from tics, and should not be. This is U personal Government, It is a ty Government, The cianks inaiat that in order to attain a neaa like administration of public faira we must have a aet of civil vice rulea and examining with their life tenures and lists, have not studied the cies of European monarch* to tftgc. It is just here the between them and Republican OOmes in, and, whenever that ferenee is removed, we shall bad a revolution of the essential oiplee of our political fabric. No, no; two things hurt Mr. land; first, bis own weakness in own State of New York; and a vaat and successful use of aod falsehood by the Republicans. Men pass a way. Principles forever. The battle for an distribution of the burthens and •fits of Government has just It will aot end until the victory won by the masses over the lists. The President has made brave fight, and bravely lost For the present that ia tb* end him. But the future will find every Grover Cleveland slain, a en living GroTer Clevelands, cap-a-pie to contest the With the legions of the Money Abellsk the Electoral College. N. Y. Star: The abolition of indirect and enmbarsome method ehooeing a President is a that is not likely to be from the public mind until change proposed shall have been ally effected. Id fact, ever tee voters of the country cboae den over Hayes by a majority of qaarter of a million, only to be frawded of their choice through galixed indirection, made by the system of voting by State*, movement for popular election President and Vice-President been inevitable. The miied system will become intolerable with tbe in crease of States having no more Sena tor than Coogreistnao, and vet sura of ns much power through the sens tonal electors as if their represent* lion in Congress, according to popu lation, were multiplied tenfold. There luero is in uu no question ijumiiuii of v/* State rigbl| propor ] y inrolveii in the Eleo College problem. The exiat ing Hjstem is simply one of State wrongs. If we would maintain local aelf government in independent States we must take care that ground be not afforded for jnat criticism of the home rule principle, by insisting on an ap plication of the local government the ory so unfair as to do injustice be tween localities and prevent the peo people from carrying out their will in the composition of the general government. The snbject of tariff reform will oontinne to be the main question of the policy ef the Government, and as the people get thoir eyos opened to the enormity of the robbery per petrated under th# false terra of protection” the party in power will be compelled to lessen tbe unoeces aary burdenB of the people. When it is known that the Repub lican candidate for Mayor only re eeived 07,000 votes, while the Itepnb lican candidate for President receiv ed 105,000 votea in New York city, it is not difficult to understand bow the State of New York was lost to the Democratic party, Nomination of County Officer* in Pike. Orthodox Democrat. On the 7th inst at Zobulon the con vention of delegates from each dis¬ trict ia the county met for the pur pose of nominating county officers. Upon motion the present ordinary and sheriff were renominated by ao •lamation. After this nomination there was some skirmishing as to which side should have the office of olerk of the superior court, that be ing the next office to be tilled. This office by virtue of right should have gone to the anti side of the conven¬ tion, and no doubt such would have been the case if the antis had not been so unmindful of duties one to another as tor tome of them to vote squarely for men on tbe opposite side, thereby hoping to secure otbei offices. The nomination resulted in Mr. D. C. Hightower of this place as the man for the clerk. The presen incumbent Capt. VV, D. Redding wa* chosen as receiver of tax return* for the next two years. The office of tax collector was given to Rev. C. W. Oliver much to the gratification of his friends, as well as to himself. The office of coroner, surveyor and of county treasurer were alioted to the present incumbents. As to county commissioners the two who now hold office ware renominated by acclamation. To fill the other office of county commissioner John E. Gardner was chossn. The convention manifested os tbe whole a spirit of harmony, which seems to very much gratify the members of tbe convention as well as those who were present as speo tators, and now our grand old noun ty is again one fraternal brotherhood, being united by the ties of true de mocraey.
