When they first re ceived the informttiou they belli ved it a bon, but tbe negro seemed in such d*ud earnest about tbe mrtter they decided to luvestigate matters and immediately went in search of tbe police. When they were found they proceeded at once to tbe lear of tbe store and there fennd that they bad been correctly informed. Ie tbe door several holes had been bored and in one *>f them wss a bar of iron placed as if the burglars in tended tu use it to wrench tbe lock from the door. Several other tools sre fouud lying conveniently around. Tbe burglars must have become alarmed and left before their work bad been completed. The poliee deputised Dixie Ison to arrest Cbailie Simmon*, * mullatto negro, and Will Simmons, a white man. wbo has bean here for sev eral day* loafing on the streets and it is said, spending his nights m gambling. Dixie found Charley Siumtou* juat below Dock Ison’s bar and proceeded to arrest kiiu Place ing him in charge of the police, lie went in search of tbe white man. He waa found in front of tb« New York store and also placed under arrea*. In his possession waa found a pistol. Everything pouits to their guilt and they will find it a veiy serious sffair before the law is done with them. There was another negro implicated in the burglary,bnt at jet he h :s not been caught. The prisoners were put in the guard bouse. Yesterday they were brought before Squire Sherrill, but tbe examination was postponed until Monday and they were remanded to jail. Something About the Hew Police Force of the City, The new chief, .Captain J. F. Maun, was ou the streets bright and early yesterday morning, with a new suit of clothe* aul a new 6ort white hat. Since the war he has been merchandising and kcep'mg warehouse, mostly ill Griffin, and was in the Alliance Warehouse at the time of hi* election, lie proposes to keep order and to rua things aa they should he run, to the best of hi* know led go aud ability, and for a while at least it may he best for the boys to lay iu their w hiskey on Saturday. Frank Mann in a clever gentleman, and should have the hearty support of ah cit izens in the performance of hi* duties. Garry Cunningham and FrtnX Doc are members of the old force and the bc«t two upon it. They arc experienc ed, know their duty and we believe will perform it. The third policeman, J. F. Matthess, is a new man and remains to be tested. He was former!)' a policeman in Barnesville, and has been hers about four months; a carpenter by trade. B. Hudson be made chief. Several aldermen had come to Mr. Hudsen during the day and asked him to run, and *ix vote#, or a two-thirds majosity, were pledged to him if he would be a candi¬ date; bat while deeply appreciating this unsolicited eompliment by the citizens, he felt that his business would.not allow him tv accept the office, and his name was with¬ drawn from nomination by Alderman Burr.
