Thay eohaao^ tbe value of land and other property, beild op town, along their routu*, sot hoaineu feeder*, afford t reat advantage totravel aud freight, iuvi’n i nmigraiion aud pro vent emigration. Twenty years ago railroada iu G*w gia were not appreciated as highly a» they are now, and people tbought leva of ,-lUiti.' at lyig distance fro.a them. N-iw, however, every body wanta t» g#t *• near a radr.w4 a* j.t.s sible. Town* through which one doca not pan are vary likely to tuf fer, and laada local ad iuuouvcnieully from one do not Bud a very ready sale. In no way is Georgia's g-eat pro gress shown more clearly than in her railroada. For quite a number years new Huai have been alneat continually in process of construe tion, and Georgia stands vet^ near the head of the lists of state* which have made the greatest stride* in , railroad building. Rut noiwitbatand ing this, there is nerd for more roads, aud particularly is tuia true of lower part of the state. Tue new lines which have been constructed, taken in conjunction with the old and established ones, have facilitated travel very greatly. For instance, a representative of the Morning News left Macon a few morniogs ago by the Southwestern road fi-r Columbus, where he arrived at 7 a. iu., when he left by the Geor gia Midland audGulf road for Griffin, arriving in th« last named city in time for snpoer, after whicu he took the Central train for Savannah, reach ing b« re next morning. Thus, in a little more than twenty four hourr, be hud been in four cities of three different sections of the State, one of the cities being on the western and another on the eastern border. The people of Columbus did a great thing when they built the Georgia Midland and Gulf road. The road is a business feeder of that city, and it traverses a fertile section, iu which bitberte a railroad was an knowD, and wLich it is rapidly davel oping. It forms one side of a trian gle, of which the Southvv*stein and the Centrals roads form the other sidee. A few miles from Griffin it ie crossed by the Atlanta aid Flotida road—a line which also has opened np new territory to the commercial world- The peo| le of Savannah should study the railroad map of Geo gir, and see if it would not be to tbeir in terest to build some new lines. Congressman Allen’s Illustration. Washington Star. None of the national legislators outiblne Representative Johu M. AUep, of Mississip¬ pi, as a story-teller, and some of hie little anecdotes are as ranch to the point as thoae which made President Lincoln se popular- Mr. Allen w»s chat tin* with a reporter over the resuits of the late election, and on being asked whether he ttonglit the next Honse was going to be republican or dem ocratic, was rather shy. ‘ I feel,” said he, ‘like aconverted receiver of stolen goods. I want to be honest, but I don’t want to give op anything I’ve got.” The conversation continued for some time but Mr. Allen was still unwilling to say defln itelywbathe thought about the matter. Finally, the reporter asked him pointedly: “Will the Fifty-first congress be repoblican or democratic?” Apparently Ignoring the question, the Mississippian said: “Down In my town some few jw>rs ago, there lived a man who owned a small two story frame house. In the lower portion of that humble structure he ‘kep store,’ and in the upper room he slept. One night the house was discovered to be ou fire, and it was feared fora while that the owner would perish in the flames. The fears were not reelized, however, for the man awoke to the situation before the floor¬ ing on which he repoeed was destroyed- There was no time for etiquette nor for mak- ing any elaborate toilet. He just dropped out of the window, clad only in a shirt that was more remarkable for its brevity then it* cleanliness. The devot-ring flame* mad* short work of the hou-e, and the luckless owner marched excitedly among the crowd exclaiming in agonizing tone-, as he finger ed the shirt: ‘This is all 1 have in the world; I am utterly ruined—this is all I have in the world.’ He repeated this so frequent ly that it became wearisome to more than one of those fensitire people who reside in Tupelo, and finally one of the j. yelled out, If that’s ail you have, for heaven's sake tear it off, throw it in the fire, snd start even with the world.’" “That,” couclndad Mr. Allan, “is about the fix the democracy is just n„w. The Re- pchlicaos have everything else, so they may just as well take ■ urshirt too- it is euly a I very short shirt anyhow ” KlBging Seise* In the ears, sometimes a roaring buzxing sound ia caused by eatnrrh, that exceeding ly disagreeable snd very enmmon disease Loss of smell or hesrlng also reelult from oa tarrh.
