A apaaalation upon the face* of tb* hurrying throng may have been idle, but it had an interest, and, yield ing to UN impulse, a reporter on Christmas •*• watched the restless crowd. The genial glow cf Christ¬ mas tide had touched the atty, hat now had then a shadow fall about the drifting scene and marred its marry meaning. A few feet removed from the apot whare the writer stood ware gather¬ ed e group of children. Their faces ■ere turned lull upen a window lit up by the resplendent beauties of a Christmas trea. The story of a city was written on their features. A trio, warmly clad, rosy oheeked, bright ayad and happy in tbs reflected at¬ tractions of a poaaessicn which their own homes, they knew, would sooa surely reprodaee, stood dose to the window, whieh their warm brsath frosted ae thsir gleeful laughter rang out from unruffled hearts. Just be¬ hind them stood a boy and girl as larger. The hand of the latter rested iu that of the former; brother and sister, perhaps, heirs to poverty sura ly sad friends ia desolation the mule caress revealed. Their eyes, toe were rivited upou the gandy window, but woader was hidden in such wistful looks as tell of ashes in the heart. For them, ala», they knew too well that Christmas meant no bright token, no light,«o hope. They stood upon the border of the p»ra>Jife of their uatutored but ardent dreams, and upon its fairness and ii* splen¬ dor their hungering eyes r*»tid with a fascination which, though woven with the knowledge of denial, grew as the minutes tied. Her# joy, tbtre the desolation ot death; here beauty; there blackness; here wealth, there poverty—and they touched elbows; the on* smiled, the other moaaed, and the laughter of one mingled with tkd heart’s dirge of tb* other. And this is life and must \ e. Just beyond them are a country man, bis wife and ehild. The man was a sturdy yonng fellow, his new, stiff sheet, black bat and suit of ready made clothing, betokening a tour of the stores already made, while the neat, if not fashionable sttire of the woman, her new woolen glovts, tb* bright feather in her bonnet end iaatrous gaiters showed that her liege lord bad not been unmindful of her desire*,too. On one strong arm of tb* husband rested a tot of a child, kb bead encased in a red cap, mittens of tbe some color on the chubby bends which tugged at the father's coat collar. The eyes seem to be serious a* tb* figure approach •a; one louffitpt them is sufficient to make certain that they have not noticed the gaudy display windows ranged along (he thoroughfare scarce six feet away. Care is stamped on every lineament of the firm face; soft lines are so faint that they sug« gest ouly memory of buoyant days *f youth and joy and gladness. And yet, if thti ruling creed which meas¬ ures joy be right, this man of all the throng iu sight should be the hip¬ pies’, Uis gold Itas grown in vol¬ ume during the year whose dying footsteps he is not hearing, his name is chronicled aa that of ot.c whom fortune always favors, wile and chil¬ dren adorn handsome home, health has blessed its inmates, snd honors of rich fruitago and rare prom tse have fallen to him. But happi¬ ness does not rest #n his face; it tells of a longiug still unsatisfied. Close upon the heels of this men came another and in hard corn pari son. A youth of flushed fuco and handsomely dressed. The son was even now enjoying his Christmas nc oording to bis taste, but a glance at bis face and slight notice of his bear mg showed that be had not deemed water the most appropriate holiday flaid. • * * Behind him tripped a society girl, heavily eacqued, well gloved and booted, a merry light in her Ins trous brown eyes ami o warm glow on cheeks of that line, {hough pro «aiccolor, which even to the days of tradition it has been accustomarv to term as “peach and cream,” which to the fairness of the pearl cluster at her throat, rosy us tbo tiist blush of dawn, A capital maiden, fair and buovan’, whose light heart was Hut tering to fresher emotions just now under this Christmas smell than ball room or boudoir had ever known, With half listless step, behind the vis ion bright enrae one who faring no less the stamp of high born life, of fered a sad contrast to its happier flow. ‘‘Shabby genteel ” What two words rneau more that is pitiful, less that is hopeful! A woman past tbe middie age efauw.i?, her garments neat but worn to that degree which caught a faint sLiuy rvfl etion of the sun as she passed at the right angle for its detection. Shopping foff Christmas she must do, for ibe “world’ to which she oucu belonged was shop ping that bright afternoon, but i.<>w slender the contents of .ho purs;',‘.he poo: ly gloved hand held with regula tion to display. And so the lights a’id shadows mingled in the charging throng, each f.ic# new, but all gradually rangm^ themselves under close inspection into two mui pie, inevitable classes of humanev-- those whom fortune favors and who welcome Christmas as a season for unfettered joy, and those—ar# they not in the majority ?—whose bps ate never strangers to the i sues of blast ed hopes, whose bosoms carry bur dwns, great or sinaii. which b. he the brightness of eye, and s’eai tome thing, more or less, as t he case in ay be, from the edict which aimed at perfect “peace and good will to men.” Stxtk or Omo, Cm or Toi.kdo, > Lrcxs County, 8.8.
