A CAR TRACER.
HOW THE CENTRAL KEEPS UP WITH
• ITS ROLLING STOCK.
An Easy System that will Interest You
—Mileage is Charged, But the
Road it Still Behind.
Theodore Wells, of Savannah, is
tbe well known and very efficient car
accountant of the (Mitral railroad.
Many of tbe News readers, doubt
less, do not know tbe dutios of tbe
err accountant, and perhaps bare of
ten wondered, when they met a Cen
tral oar hundreds of miles away from
Georgia, what it wat doing and bow
it would fiud i s way b toe.
Here is something that will inter
est them, learned from Mr. Welle
one day recently as be stopped off a
abort ti*i» in Griffin:
‘‘Before tbs adoption of tbe uni
form gauge,” said Mr. Wells, “care
did not become such woful tramps as
now, In those days a Southern car
did not pass beyond Cincinnati,
freight being transferred at that city
to cars that ran on tbe broader track
in aae in tbe Norlb and West.
“Cars were then readily confined
to within a reaaoaable distance of
tbe company’s lines. Now, however,
when a box ear rolls out of the St
varnish depot with freight consigned
to Lonicville, perhaps, it : a jnst ax
likely to keep traveling until it reach
ex tbe Golden Gale as to be return
ed To show you how this is take
tbe case of 1076, The Central Com
pany bought it about n year ago and
it was brought to Atlanta. It wax
then turned over to tbe Wextern snd
Atlantic road for Western traffic in
stead of to the South. Since then it
has drifted from road to road. The
last that was beard of it was iu Octo
ber, when the Ogdenburg and Lake
Champlain Roadturned it over to tbe
St. Johnbury and Lake Champlain
Road for a trip to some point in
Meine. Owned by tbe Centre! for
one year, and yet it has never passed
over a mile of Central railroad track
or carried a load of freight consign
ed to Central railroad points. Tbe
New England companies will wear
tbe wheels off it befere we secceed
in.inducing than to let it cocne back.
They are ao far away from here that
they appear utterly iadifferent to any
appeals we make, aud all that can be
doneia to wait patiently until for
time sends it South again.”
“You are getting paid far it, of
eourse?”
“Yes, at the rate of three loertba
of a cent per mile. If it iraveli
300 miles in a day, and that is above
tbe average, the Central receive* for
its uee $2.75. If it had it in uae on
its own lines now it would earn be
teew filO and $20 iu the same time.
Now that we have lost sight of it we
will send te tbe lest company in
wboae possession we knew it to be
what is known •• a tracer, giving the
last record known to ub, and request
ing information as to its where
abouts.
“Tbe system is quite -imple,” con
tinued Mr. Wells, “and interesting
in its nature. Tbe principle laclor
is tbe “junction card.” A car leaves
the Central aad goes on te Kansas
City,Memphis and Birmingham read
A card is at once aeat to me giving
the uumber of the car, the date at
which it left the Central road, where
and to what ether road. No. 2725
was transferred to K. C-, M.& B.
road aome lime ago. Frem that
road it went over ihe Kansas City,
Fort Seott ana Memphis, Louisville
aud Nashville, Cincinnati Southern,
Cieoinnati, Hamilton and Dayton,
aad Michigan Central road to tbe
New York Central and Hudson Riv¬
er road. At each junction a card
was sent, so that we were enabled to
know just how much time aud Lew
many miles it passed over each road,
and what company had possession of
it. A tracer is now after it, as oer
last information came oa December
11 .
“Sometimes half of tbe freight
equipment of the Central rosd will
he in uae by other companies. This,
of course, utce*»ua:ea Haidar sction
on oar pari. In the inenth of Oc¬
tober tbe mlieige made by lorrlgu
freight cars on our service was 7115,
836 miles, and the rental paid by
this company for tbeai mt fil6,140, j
27, or enough to build abeu
thirty good cars. To be sure there [
was something due -ui by O'her !
roads for the ase of our cars, bu; it
did uot far exceed $3,000, and the
balauue of trade was ceasiderabiy
against as iu this rtspeet. Tibs
gives aeaae idea of tbe immense vol¬
ume of tbe fraight bueinees in the
oottoa se*M«. Between May and
fiepteaxttar there ix no need of extra
