CENTENARY SERVICE.
THIS MORNING AT THE PRES*
BYTERIAN CHURCH.
In Commemoration of the Centennial
of the Republic of the Unit*
cd State*.
Services at St. Baal’s—the President la
Washington's peCr.
In accordance with the proclamation
of the president of the United States
and the Governor of the State of
Georgia, there will be services o*
thanksgiving and prayer at the lec¬
ture room of the Presbyterian church
at nine o’clock this morning, con
ducted by the pastor, Bev. M. McN.
McKay. The people of all denomina¬
tions are earnestly requested to be
present, as there will be no services at
the other churches, their pastors be¬
ing unavoidably absent. Let us
turn out and give thanks for all the
blessings which we enjoy, as a nation
and as a people, and ask God, as the
author of these blessings, to continue
them to us and to our children.
It has been jnst one hundred years
since this republic was formally or¬
ganized by the inauguration of
George Washington as president, on
April 80, 1780. The day has been
made a legal holiday and will be uni¬
versally observed. It is hoped that
stores will be closed between the
of rune and ten o’clock, in or-
all may attend; but in any case
should go who can.

Suicide of Ben. F. Lawson, Formerly
of Oriffln.
The following special appeared in
yesterday's Macon Telegraph:
“Savannah, April 28 .— Franklin
Lawton, a young white man, com¬
mitted suicide at his boarding hpuse
on Bryan street this morning
by taking twenty grains of morphine,
'SSSSZSSSt
out with a horse pistol at the Savan-
nah hospital last month. Hisfriend’s
death upset Lawton’s mind, and
after five attempts at suicide in var¬
ious ways he finally succeeded.
“He left a letter addressed to Col.
Charles Simpson, of Columbus, Ga.
He left a letter to the newspapers
here, saying b» was a member of the
Baptist church, and was a son of a
I Baptistministerwell-knownthrough¬
out the Btate.
“Lawton was a spiritualist like
Naujaek, but was not very strong
minded. He was for a long time
butler at the Savannah hospital, and
it was there that he wfts under the
influence of Naujaek.
“After the latter’s suicide he was
locked up and while in the hospital
was identified by parties from Grif¬
fin as Henry Lawson. The papers
in his trunk show that Lawton was
an assumed name.’’
The unfortunate young man men¬
tioned was doubtless Benjamin F.
Lawson, formerly of Griffin, and not
Henry. He went to Savannah sev¬
eral months ago to have his eyes
operated upon, and succeeded after¬
ward in securing the position as but¬
ler, as mentioned. Hewill be remem¬
bered as a clerk in Hasselkus’ shoe
store. The remains will be brought
here for interment, arriving on the
4 p. m. train to-day.
The Spalding Greys, of which Mr.
Lawson was a member, will attend
the funeral.
