On Matter* Relating to the Central
Railroad-I>u» Season:
"What is new in Central affairs?”
This question was asked yesterday
by a News reporter of President Al¬
exander, of the Central Railroad.
Hesakl:
“Absolutely nothing new to note.
This time of the year and during the
month of May are the duller seasons „
for Southern roads. Nothing Is is
CHrried beyond the staple arti- :i-
and it is too late for northern
too early lor southern travel
After a while the tide of summer
travel will set in and the melon car¬
rying trade will begin, and greater
activity will be resumed on the south¬
ern road.”
“What effect are the fast freight
vegetable trains having on the vege¬
table shipments by steamer ?”
“The steamers seem to be getting
their shore, and are doing about a 8
well as last season. I have heard of
no complaint of a failing off in
freights in steamer. The vessels are
getting all they want.
“While in New York,” General Al¬
exander said, “I visited the steamer
City of Birmiugbam. Work on her
cabin facilities is progressing favora¬
bly, and she will be ,out i fl a few days.
She will not be put on her regular
schedule until about June 1, as she
wiil take the trips of other vessels
that need to go on the docks for
slight repairs. Work is reported a s
actively in progress on the new
steamer building at Chester.”
“There is A general belief tha t Sa¬
vannah is going to be considerably
behind in its cotton' receipts this
year,* and that the Central has let the
Virginia ports increase their receipts
at the expense of Savannah. What
is your explanation of the short¬
age?” General Alexander was asked.
“I don’t think that Savannah will
be behind. Cotton started off slow.
and at one time Savannah was
80,000 to 90,000 bales short, but
this baa been reduced, I think, to
««bcw>t bates. I think this
will be made up before the close of
the season.”
Others differ with General Alexan¬
der in this view, and show figures to
prove that since the Terminal com¬
pany has got control of the Central
cotton has been directed to Newport
News, Norfolk and West Point on the
Virginia coast, and the Central has
not been able to control its territory.
It w estimated that while Savannah
has thus far increased her sea island
cotton receipts 6,526 balm, she is
short of upland 46.394 bales, and
while Charleston is 599 bales ahead
on sea island, she is short 21,296
bales on upland. The receipts at
Virginia ports have an excess over
last yesr of 54,065 bales—within 700

Something Extra.
An Atlanta florist received an order
from a fire enginecompiuiy for a flor¬
al tribute, “something extra,” to be
sent to the funeral of a deceased
member. He decided that the usua ®
mottoes would not be “something
extra,” and after considerable
tion prepared a large pillow of white
pinks ; on which appeared the letters
“8. Y. L.” in violets. At the funeral
he asked one of the committee how
he liked the floral tribute. ‘ThefloW-
ers look all right,” was the response,
“but what in thunder does ‘S. Y. L.’
stand for?” “Why, can’t you get on
to that?” inquired the florist. “None
of ns have yet been able to.” “You
said you wanted something extra,
