General V. D.Oroner, from Norfolk,
Va., represents the organized oppo¬
sition to General Mahone. He is a
wealthy steamboat and cotton man
at the little city on the capes, and
has done a great deal toward the de.
velopment of that section of the
South. General Groner, like General
Mahone, was in the Southern army,
and he was also the first member of
the old Democratic Committee to
raise the revolt inside his party or-
gauizntion which brought General
Mahone such political power. Mr.
Groner and the little General quar¬
relled three or four years ago, and
now the Norfolk man is chairman of
the Republican Committee, which op¬
poses Mahone. Strange how things
shift in the great game of polities I
General Groner made himself com¬
fortable at the Hoffman House and
said:
“There can be no Republican suc¬
cess in Virginia with General Mahone
at the head of the party. He is re-
lentless in his persecution of any and
every man who differs with him.
Virginia ought to be and would be a
Republican State, were it notforhim.
Had it not been for his action, it
would have chosen Harrison electors
in the last campaign. The Demo-
