A GREAT F
THE EXHIBIT OF THE STATE
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. <•
An Important Meeting to Prepare for
the Coming Convention in
f ~ * ': f.H'vf'' July.
* '
• -t
Ah ban been announced, and us we
propose tp keep before tbe people, the
Georgia State Horticultural Socie¬
ty will meet in Griffin, at the invita¬
tion of tbe Spalding county society
and the city council, on July 31st
and August let next. This time is
.not so very far off, and a great many
arrangements are to be made in or¬
der tagive .those attending a proper
reception. There would doubtless
be three hundred people in atten¬
dance under ordinary circumstances,
and’ tbe experiment farm will draw a
hundred more. This will be a large
number for Griffin to entertain with
her present facilities, and ample ar-
rangments must be made in time.
For thisreaSon, the meeting of the
Spalding County Horticultural So¬
ciety on next Tuesday, at 2 p. m. at
the court house, should be well at¬
tended riot only by members but by
citizens, in order that full consulta¬
tion may be had and proper com¬
mittees appointed,
This State convention, attended as
it will be by the best people from all
parts of the State, will not only be
very much larger than any we have
ever had to entertain before, but will
be very important and profitable to
our growing town, and we must ar¬
range to present our best appear¬
ance to our guests. P. J. Berckman,
of Augusta, the president of the
State society, writes: “I loolc for
ward to our next session as one that
will long be remembered in the life of
the society. We meet in a remarka¬
bly rich section, where the material
is abundant for .work, and we have
also the prospect of the most pro¬
fuse crop of fruit’ ever known here,
thus assuring success.” He expects
to fill at least two or three tables
with products of his own orchards
and vineyards, and many members
from that section alone will be exhi¬
bitors also.
Why is it so many suffer from rhea
tism, aches, pains, heart' kidney diseases,
liver complaints, affections,
etc.? It is simply because they will
not come and be healed. All diseases
begin from a want of iron in the
blood. This want of iron makes the
blood thin, watery and impure. Im¬
pure blood carries weakness, and dis¬
tress
yourself from aches, enjoying* pains perfect and freedom ill-

Phyloxera in Felix Corput’s Grapes,
It was gravely announced recently
that MV. Felix Corput’s grapes were
about to be destroyed by pbyloxera.
Mr. Corput sent tbe insects to Prof.
Clifton and there followed a scientific
examination and the pictures of the
bugs in the newspapers. That Mr.
Corput should for one moment have
thought that the pbyloxera was hurt¬
ing Bis grapes must produce the im¬
pression that he is an amateur in the
business. It is a well known fact
that the phjloxeracan produce no
effect on the American vines, that
millions of American plants are year¬
ly exported to France and Germany
to be used as resistants to this pest
that is hurtful to foreign plants.
Prof. Clifton’s scientific examination
and the pictures may have discovered
a new. Insect and it is suggested that
it be called after Mr. Felix Corput,
Felix-error, not pbyloxera. The mod¬
ern discovery is not the pbyloxera or
root louse, but probably mite, and
later advices say that Corput’s grapes
are safe; and it will be well to have
the public know that the American
plants are mightier than the root,
louse. Grape Grower.

“ARE YOU THERE f
‘Yis, Sir, As Large ms hoite, and

Twoice as Natural.” -
One of the richest and most origi¬
nal characters that ever appeared in
Griffin, though a thorough gentleman
withal, was P. Fitzsimmons, the
Irishman who put up the telephones
in the houses of members a short
time ago. He became friends with
everybody, and as it was the first
work he had donean the South the
idea seized him to secure'a collection
of the pictures of the best citizens of
(place. This he readily did and
3 bad an album madeforthena, and
now possesses by far the most com¬
plete portrait gallery of Griffin extant,
comprising over one hundred pictures.
In return for these he now presents,
through the News and Sun, his own.
Mr. Fitzsimmons says: “I have
been through England, Scotland, Ire¬
land, Wales, France, Channel Islands,
New York, Massachusetts and other
places omtelephone business, but I
have never met with such jovial peer
pie as the Griffinites; and when I
look at my album of Griffin it will re¬
mind me of the happy times I spent
there.”
A Valuable Remedy.
A letter from S. P. Wardwell, Bos¬
ton, says: “I used Clarke’s Extract
of Flax (PapiUon) Catarrh Cure in
June last for Hay Fever with great
satisfaction, and find it is the only
thing I have seen which would allay,
without irritatinfi, the inflammation
of the nostrils and throat. Itasooth-
ing and heoling properties were mark-
ek and immediate.”, Barge bottle
