The ebon-hued chairman has called
a meeting of the Republican executive
committee of this county in Griffin on
Saturday, June 29, “to act on mat¬
ters now pending.” What office
does the Hon, Epps Blanton want?
Hon. J. D. Stewart returned from
Athens yesterday. He says that
they had a fuU meeting of the board
and .that this county stands an ex¬
cellent chance of having a school es¬
tablished in connection with the Ex¬
periment Farm.
We do not like to make suggestions
to the city fathers, but it behooves
the proper authorities to have orders
isstied and carried oat in regard to
the cleanliness of the city. Some
parts of the town need a thorough
renooation.
Rev. BL P. Meyers, of Barnesville,
will preach at the Methodist charch
this morning. At night there will be
Bible meeting. Dr. Bradley went to
Senoia yesterday to preach the com¬

A number of fruit growers of this
section went to Atlanta on Thursday
and made arrangements with J. F.
Simons & bo. to receive small con¬
signments of fruit from any part of
the State and forward the same to
the best available markets in refriger¬
ator cars. Most of .the fruit from
this section, however, will be shipped
from this point and Vineyard in
whole carloads. ' %
DeKalb Chronicle: “While in At.
lanta last Friday, we ran upon our
affable and able'representative in
Congress, Hon. JohnD. Stewart. He
looks welland happy; and unless
some unforseen circumstances arises,
he will be in fine trim for the boys','
next year. Tnere is going to be a
powerful effort made to unseat this
deservedly popular representative at
the next election, but it will take a
powerful fast horse to run in ahead
of Stewart.”
Henry County Weekly: “Oneby
one the roses fall. Gene Speer, well-
known in Georgia newspaper circles,
has resigned as chief of a department
in U. S. Treasurer’s office. Do not
let it afflict you, Gene, take your
medicine like a little man, and when
we turn the rascals out in ’92 you
shall have a better job. It is true the
fellows will steal some of the govern¬
ment’s money, but they can’t steal
the offices in '92. Remember the
Spanish proverb, young man; ‘pa.
tience and shuffle the cards.’ ”
The blackberry crop is immense
and the berries, now, are large and
luscious. They are both delicious
and healthful. Nature has provided
some fruit lor almost aqy s s oWB

abundant. Thewhlackberry is worth
many hundred of dollars to this sec¬
tion, though our people know noth¬
ing of the rich possibilities offered
by them. Preserves, jelly, jam and
wine are the chief uses to which they
are put, yet they can be dried hud
canned with great snccess. Black¬
berries put up in jars without hermetically, any

FOR HIS HEALTH.'
Dan Smith Gone to the Mountains of
Upson County.
While Griffin is acknowledged be
ione of the finest health resorts in*tho
whole country, yet there are those so
delicately constituted that other
climes suit them better on account
of their peculiar maladies.
\ Withbutenumerating'other causes,
it may be stated that this atmos¬
phere is not sufficiently rarifled for
an afflicted honey thief severely
stricken with No. 6. bird shot.
Taking a correct diagnosis of jiis
own case and without asking the
superflous advice of a physician,
Dan Smith, of these parts, left on
Friday for the Pine Mountains in the
■ west of Upson county, where his
sweet, honey craving nature first
saw the light of this world.
He did not stand upon the order of
his going, nor wait to bid all his
friends good-bye; but he never will
be missed. May his stay be pleasant
and long---very long, if not so very
pleasant. ^

A Usautiful "War Poem.
Macon, Juue 10, 1889.—Judgo
Richard H. Clark: In rambling
through some old”, papers gome
months ago, I stumbled upon the en¬
closed production from the pen ofthe
brave and gifted George^McKnight,
formerly of South Carolina, but who
has now gone to join the "silent ma¬
jority. Major McKnight more near,
ly resembled poor Phil Tracy than
anyone I ever met, and lienee my
great admiration for the man. When
I found the little poem I at once' de¬
termined upon forwarding it to you,
but from time to time deferred doing
so, and today fulfil the promise then
made to myself. Its wein of humor
thjew a veil over the aching heart of
a phUosopher who made the best of
everything. Believing that you will
appreciate this moreea u of the past,
I inclose it with the request that you
make such use of it as you may feel
disposed. With very best wishes, I
am, dear judge, very sincerely your
friend, ; James A. Damour.
MY LOVE AND I. /
My love reposes op a rosewood frame—
A bunk have I,
A couch of featherly down fills up the same,
Mine’s straw, but dry;
She sinks to sleep at night with scarce a sigh—
With waking syes I watch the hoars creep byj
My love her daily dinner takes in state—
And so do Iff)
The richest viands Sank her silver plate,
Coarse grub have I ;
Pure wine she sips at ease, her thirst to
slake— s-* ^
I pump my drink lrom Erie’s limpid lake.
My love has all tbe world at will to roam—
Three acres I; v
She goes abroad or quiet sits at home—
. So cannot I;
Bright angels watch around her couch at
night—
A Yank with loaded gun keeps me in sight;
A thousand weary miles now stretch between
My love and I; *
To her, this wintry night, cold, calm, serene,
I waft a sigh;
And hope with oil my earnestness of soul.
Tomorrow’s mail may bring me my parole.
There’s hope ahead! we’tt one day meet
ag*»n. .
My love and I;
We'll wipe away all tears of sorrow then,
Her lorelit eye
Will all my many troubles then beguile,
